Food without copper!? HELP! I am looking for a SOLID dog food that doesn't contain copper. My little Lexie-Lou has a VERY sensitive liver and can't handle the copper. Her ALT score JUMPS if she eats it. Does anyone know of ANY solid dog food that doesn't have copper in it? I cannot find any and the wet dog food she is on is very expensive and STINKY!! She really enjoys it so I was thinking of mixing the wet with a little kibble for her morning feeding, but at $1.60 a day I don't know how much longer I can afford feeding JUST the wet food. Thanks much! |
Wow that's a hard one. What is the brand of the wet food you are feeding? Did you ask the vet about a dry food without copper? |
I'm not sure there is a food without copper. I feed Nature's Logic, which does have some copper in it but the unique thing about Nature's Logic is that all the vitamins and minerals are from natural sources. Most foods use proteinated minerals, which are not organic. That could be why they affect your dog's liver so much. If you'd like to read about Nature's Logic, here's the link... Nature's Logic |
Try Blue I have a yorkie and a pug. My pug was having high levels of PH in his urine and we thought it might be his dog food even though we always got the more expensive kinds. But because of his problems we started doing research and switched to Blue. It has copper but not the kind in most dog foods. It is Copper Amino Acid Complex. It is a holistic food. You might want to try it and see if it helps.:thumbup: both my yorkie and pug love it and they both have great shiny coats and are healthy again!! They have a special blend for small breeds. |
I don't think I've seen a dry dog food without copper added, and i can definitely understand your frustration. I think its added in because it tends to be lost during processing and its one of the those minerals present in all natural organisms. I might be wrong here, but I think the copper issue is a big deal for Irish Setters. There is something genetic that causes liver problems. I noticed a bunch of posts mentioning Purina Fit & Trim having low copper levels on a few sites when I googled dog food and copper (you got me really curious!) I hope some other YT members can have something to add, but if not perhaps there is an Irish Setter group out there that can help you? They might be naturally more knowledgeable about the topic. Also, this would be more labor intensive but I would think a lot of the dog food companies would be more then willing to give you the copper levels present in all of their foods if you contact them. I wouldn't know how low of a level you would need but its something to think about and possibly go off of. |
It would have to be an rx food because all regular dog foods should contain it. Have you looked into the L/D kibble? Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 is low in copper and may work. |
