12 week shots different vets say different things...is it alright for me to give him his shots myself at 12 weeks? he had one at 6 and at 9 after this does he need anymore? exception of rabies. |
Some vets do give the last set at 12 weeks but it is not a good schedule at all. I think I'd wait til 13 weeks and then do one more at 17. Sixteen weeks is really the earliest most peopel consider stopping and that is a bit young. Eighteen weeks is probably better. Starting at 6 weeks just interferes with maternal antibodies leaving the maternal antibodies and the vaccine not too effective. Unless you are ordering from a trustworthy company and know exactly how to give vaccines, it is really better to just let the vet do it. |
Ellie May, I have a question for you. My new puppy has recieved her first round of vaccines , she is now 8 weeks old. Her next round is suppose to be given on the 30th this month. Which would be at 10weeks. By the time she is done she only will be at 13 weeks  Expect for the rabies. I am going to be taking Miley to my own vet , not the one the breeder used. Should I go ahead and just start over on all the vaccines? That way she will be older once the shots are completed, and more protected? Or am I running the risk of having her over vaccinated? |
As Crystal said, shots given too soon after weaning don't take as the maternal antibodies interfere with them. Unfortunately, the shots he got at six weeks were probably worthless. He needs the last vaccination somewhere between 16-18 weeks. I've heard too many stories of puppies getting parvo because their shots were given too early. In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs |

You could give the next round at 10 weeks and then 14 and then 18. If you think you can keep her safe for awhile yet, you could probably just do 14 and 18 weeks. |
if i wait till he is 13 weeks will that not be a bit too long?...im scared he might get sick if i wait the breeder was the one who gave him his first at six then i gave him his 9 |
