Hates crate We just got Jacob (7 month Yorkie) Thursday. The breeder told us he was crate trained, but last night when we put him in the crate to sleep, he barked all night. Does anyone think it is OK for him to sleep in our small kitchen instead of zipped in a crate? |
I think it would be fine. You could always try it and see. I've never used crates or crate trained but I'm sure someone else could be of more help. :) |
how small is the crate? with you saying zipped it sounds like the crate is small. maybe something a little larger would help. but the crying will eventually stop...give it a few more days. Also, you could put the crate in your bedroom next to your bed. That may help, too. |
Size of crate The crate holds animals up to 15 pounds, it is big enough for him to turn around and lie down. My cat can even fit in it. |
When Harley first came he wasn't crate trained at all. As soon as I put him in it he would bark and scream like someone was killing him. So I just stared straight at him and told him "No!" very firmly everytime he barked or whined and after about 3 days of practice he learned to hush! lol I'm a big fan of crate training but I'm sure it's not for everybody or for every furbaby either! being confined :eek: whenever i try to stop chewie from knawing on my hands or fingers by holding him close with my hand around his mouth and tell him no ! no bite he seems to go insane wiggling and bucking like crazy trying to get away. (this is what a vet told me to do) i also tried to wrap him in a baby blanket when he gets too nippy but he acts the same. those little teeth are sharp! i hope he doesn't turn out to be a biter and too agressive :mad: most the time he is sweet and so happy to see me when i get home. i give him a rubber handled tooth brush to chew on while i brush him other wise the comb and brush would be in shreds. he never barks or cries when i put him in his crate, he just jumps up and down with an occasional whimper. it is in the living room so he feels like he's included in what ever we do. some times near bed time i'll let him out to lay by me while he falls asleep and then he doesnt mind when i put him to bed in his crate. |
All of my pets sleep in crates, that's 6, so I TOTALLY know where you are coming from. First of all, try to leave the crate around for him during the day, just open. Put treats in it during the day so he gets a feel that it is a good thing. Secondly, when my pups were babies, I put a blanket over the crate. A LIGHT blanket, so there wasn't anything for them to see and want. The first few weeks of having the babies home, I did set up an X-pen with the crate in it without the door. That gave the pup some time to get used to it. None of them TOOK to it instantly, there was definitely some time in between. Hope these give you some ideas. You can do it! It really is the best for them. You will appreciate it in the end. Here are two reasons just to start off with: 1. Helps with potty training and 2. gets them used to being confined for future needs, i.e. traveling in a carrier. |
I got Reyna when she was 2 months old and she was not crate trained. I live in an apartment so I bought a baby gate and she has the kitchen and laundry area to play and sleep in while I'm at work or at night time. She just didn't want to be alone the first week because she cried and barked the first few nights (yes almost nonstop)...but now she's a little angel at night, I put the gate up and say "Nighty night" and she walks over to her bed =) Just stay strong and don't give in...maybe get some ear plugs for a few nights! ;) Don't worry...I really was questioning whether or not I even wanted a dog those first few days...but it only gets better and I'd be lost without her now! :aimeeyork Good luck! |
I dont crate Gucci. I used a baby gate to keep her in a close area when Im not home.When I home she has full range and she uses the pee pads. I found this link in crate training, I hope is useful for you. Good luck. |
My Gucci is 15mts. we have her since she was 8 weeks, she was used to a crate but she did her business in there to. So what I did was to put her in the laundry room along with crate a baby gate near the door. I would keep the crate door open and left her water and wee wee pad outside in the room. While we were away working she had the run of the laundry room. When I left her in the morning I would give her a treat and say good girl and she automatically associates the grate with good girl. Till today when we say good girl she runs into her crate for her treat its the cutest thing and if I am going out I sometimes leave her in the laundry room. She also has full run of house but sometimes she still has accidents with number two, she is trained to go out also. At night she sleeps in her crate and she is ok with it. Its just a matter of what they get used to. I hope this helps you. |
Zoey hated her pet carrier crate,she sleeps in a 4x4 exercise pen, what I did is use xpen it has 4- 2ft sections I made it a 2x2 she loves it, this is her training crate during day then back to 4x4 at nite.It seems she likes to look out and the carrier she hates is confined,she won't even take in the car she gets motion sickness but okay on my lap. |
