Noise from Fireworks Any suggestions with the loud noise made by fireworks. Zeke is just beside himself from the first loud, sharp crack the days leading up to the 4th and for the next day or two as the "yahoo's" finish firing off their illegal stashes. If we are outside walking he is ok until he hears the first loud close by pop then does an about face and really pulls on the harness going home. Back inside the house he can not find a place "safe enough". Our guess(es) are that someone shot fireworks off right next to him before we got him a year old. Could be why he wandered off. Also, he can get upset a little when there is a good loud Florida summer time afternoon lightning storm with sharp loud cracks of thunder. I have tried the calm, reassuring verbals, treats really didn't worked that well. Same problem around Labor Day, New Year's Eve and when the city FD goes around town with the blaring the holiday music and decked out for "Santa". |
I dont know if this will work or not but its worth a try. Someone on here posted when storms are going on to put a tshirt on them and its comforting and helps them. We also turn the tv louder to try to drown it out. My Jewels is very afraid of them and alot of people in my neighborhood let them off on and around the 4th. |
I think it is best to keep them away from fireworks if possible. We have taken dogs with us before to some of the fun activities, but the fireworks really hurts their ears and they get so scared. It may be best to just avoid it if possible. Inside in their favorite crate or bed is probably what they need..... or just hold them on your lap. They just want to feel safe..... and we owe that to them, at least I think that way.. :) A reminder to keep them leashed ..... especially if there is a possibility of them getting scared and running. Also......... don't forget about ID. If they do get away..... there is a better chance of you getting them back if they have ID on them. This year, we will be watching the fireworks with Shelby & Seymour from our backyard......... we can see them in the sky, AND barely hear them. Here's to a safe and wonderful holiday! |
A month or so ago when I was researching Wylie's Cushing's - melatonin is one thing I ended up having to look into. What was so interesting, is that Melatonin can be used for phobias in dogs - especially thunderstorms and fireworks. Here are some articles for you: WebCanine.com Blog Archive Melatonin for stress Thunderstorm Phobia - Helpful Dog Info - Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue Melatonin.com - Pets and Other Animals Independence Day: Make it safe for your dog |
