Shots- Questions Ella had her 3rd set of shots yesterday (the one with all of them combined plus bordatella). She is soooo sore I cant even pick her up without her yelping. :( She is eating and drinking fine and is playful she just yelps in pain when someone picks her up. What can I do to help her or do I just have to wait it out? How long will it last? Also, when should puppies get their rabies shot. My vet wants to give it to her in 3 weeks! She will only be 15 weeks old. That doesnt seem right. Is is bad if they get it too early? I dont want her to ever get shots again :( |
Some states require the rabies shot by 16 weeks. You can try to talk your vet into putting it off until 6 months but they may refuse. It should never be given on the same day as any other vaccine. Soreness is normal after vaccines. Are her gums pink? You can ask the vet for some pain meds. Some will tell you to give baby aspirin but meds made for dogs are really better. Was the lepto included in this shot? |
No... My breeder put this huge sticker on Ella's vet records that says DO NOT GIVE LEPTOSPIROSIS TO YORKIES. She said one of hers a few yrs ago died from it. So I dont know if the vet isnt giving it to her because of that or because he just hasnt done it yet. I am not sure what the deal is with that. Is it dangerous for them to get rabies shot before 6 mo? |

Lepto is a debated vaccine. It should only be given when there is a huge need and then still it may not be a great idea. I just asked because Yorkies react to it quite often and it can make them sore (but really any of them can make them sore)... |
I have 2 yorkies, and they got their rabies shot when they were 5 months old. I had heard 6 months, but they were fine at 5 months (they are bigger yorkies though - 7 & 9 pounds at that time). I just had them get a bordatella shot on Monday, and they both started throwing up on my way home, which I guess is not normal, so I brought then back to the vet who took them for the day for observation and gave them some puppy benadril. They were OK after a while. Most of the time the vet can give medicine to help comfort the dog if it's in pain or is having uncommon symptoms (like throwing up if it's not normal). Although ask about prices - I'm finding that the stuff REALLY adds up!!. Keep in contact with your vet, as they should be able to help you through it. If your little one is in pain, hopefully they can figure out something to help. |
You are in New Mexico, right? Your state requires the rabies vaccine by 3 months old so Ella is already "late". http://www.zbirdbrain.com/VAX/RabiesLaws.pdf That's is so young for rabies! |
My vet agreed to give my little baby only half of the dose of the rabies vaccine, which I greatly appreciated. |
