Puppy scooting bum, and seems to be in pain Toby sometimes scoots his bum, which is ok, but the thing that concerns me is sometime he turns really quickly towards his back end as if something has hurt him, and then he puts his tail between his legs, hunches up and runs really quickly to his bed, or to be lifted up. Would this be normal if his anal glands needed emptied? I mentioned it to the vet and he just told me to worm him every 2 weeks until he was 16 weeks. He said it could also be constipation. I have him at the groomers at the minute, and she done his glands, and said there was a bit in them, and got a bit out. His stools are pretty solid, nothing out of the ordinary. He does look like he strains a bit to go, but goes regularly. |
Sounds like it could have been his anal glands bothering him. If he still does it then have the vet check it out. |
Tia needed hers emptied once and the vet showed me how to do it, not pleasent but she has been ok since.I call it scooting the rubbing bum thing , sometimes they can free them up themselves but just get the vet to do it. Also have a feel you can tell when they are full. Good luck. |
What are you feeding, sometimes changing food can help. Have you checked at the base of his tail for any skin irritation? |

I'm kind of surprised that your vet just brushed it off and attributed it to worms-- scooting is most often not related to worms at all. Anal glands can cause some serious problems if they need to be expressed but are not taken care of-- they can become infected, impacted with material, or even rupture. I've seen some pretty young pups have trouble with their glands too-- it isn't just an older dog thing. I'd honestly probably be looking for a different vet. |
