Just got back from the vet with Bailey. The vet clinic was packed and everyone there couldn't believe how tiny my poor baby is. They weighed him and he is 15.5ounces!!! Not even a pound. I told the vet I was upset with the breeder for saying it was okay to fly so young, the vet said that was normal age:rolleyes:..Anyhoo, She said he seemed perfectly fine, temp, heartbeat etc. His gums were a little pale. She took the poop sample and it will probably have to be sent out for testing, because we don't have the facilities here to test it:rolleyes::rolleyes:..I said it seemed like coccidia, she gave me pills call TMS and told me to watch for side effects such as vomiting, lack of energy, worsening of poop etc. I hope to god this is it and Bailey doesn't get worse. Also I can't believe how difficult it is to give a puppy a pill! He is scheduled for his next round of shots on the 25th. My poor little guy. |

Given his size you will need to be extra vigilant against hypoglycemic episodes and also realize that any presence of diarrhea or vomiting in one this size can be fatal. I'd really urge you to find a vet who offers a better equipped facility. Coccidae is easily diagnosed in most offices. |
I can't believe how lucky you are that he survived shipping. Age or not, your Vet should have been surprised too. My Gut feeling is I would be finding a better Vet. Cocci should be able to be diagnosed in every Vet office! I hope he continues to do well. |
We only have one vet, the next one is 8 hrs away. |
Jeez what kind of breeder would send a puppy THAT size out. How old is he? She should of waited til he was much bigger. My guess is this wasn't a reputable breeder! she put her pup in danger, that is so sad, and he is sick as well? poor pup I hope he recovers quickly :( |
Hopefully with the medicine and careful monitoring for hypoglycemia he will do fine. I always feed them their pills in a little soft dog food. |
When I got my Jewels she was that size. Just make sure he eats every few hours. When they are that small they dont have any reserves so you got to keep them eating |

I hear you! Good luck with Bailey. These little ones are SO tiny and my Gracie Belle is about a pound and a half!!!! Your Bailey is much smaller! I worry just like a new mommy-I AM a new mommy!!! Hugs and hope everything goes well. If you are like me we just worry-worry! |

One thing I would of asked the vet was if the medication came in liquid form . It is a chalenge to give a young en a pill! + being so tiny you have to be very careful that he does not choke. Did the vet say anything about his diet? or ask what he is eating? I am wondering if a really good high protein canned food would help him put on some weight? He is not skinny is he? just very tiny? I remember seeing his pic. when he first came home and knew he was extremely small. Thank goodness he is doing so well, and pretty healthy, considering the little bug he has right now. That should be easily treatable, but the vet should of known if that is what it was for certain. Being so small , Bailey can't afford to get too sick, he does not have a lot of reserves to keep him going. So glad that he has such a wonderful new mommy ! has he been dewormed? |

You would think the vet could have told me exactly what it was, but the poop sample can't be tested here, it has to be sent out of the area because we are not equiped here..I know, how sad is that. Gee, you would think if they had liquid form she would have given it to me..so upsetting. I don't know if he is terribly skinny, his belly is round, but he is way to tiny. |
