Rascal had an Emergency E.R. visit this weekend!
 

Well, we had quite a scare this weekend. After a long day, I finally went to lay down in my bedroom and watch a little television with my dogs. It was 9:30 pm. With in a half hour my little Rascal (4.5 mos old) lifted his head from his sleep and looked completely drunk! He was swaying and jerking around. I was immediately scared to death and then he began to shake and was very near a full seizure. I called our local e.r. vet , which is a friend of my sister's and he happened to be out of town! So I called the next closest place, which was 40 minutes away and said we would be right there. I started to supplement him with Karo syrup in case it was hypoglycemia and we headed in. I thought he was not going to make it. We got there and they kept him for observation, his blood test came back slightly elevated by the time we got there and he was a little more satable by then. He had a temp. of 96 degrees and low blood pressure. He stabilized after about an hour, and that vet thought he had a toxicity of some sort. The other vet called back to check on him and dissagreed and believes he had a hypoglycemic episode. I am still scared that this will happen again, but I am hopeful there is not anything bigger going on with him. He is very small and he means so much to us. I thought I would share this and if anyone has other suggestions to what may have happened, I would love to hear about it. ( They were also talking about meningitis, and liver shunt, but I think we have ruled the meningitis out for now)

You said the blood work was slightly elevated.
What part of it was high?

Well, I don't know, she had the info in her hand but since it was a little high, she wanted to focus on toxins and other things. I didn't think to ask. Can you explain what you know about it? I am going to call and ask.....

It was just a blood glucose test, I didn't get a full blood panel done because he was starting to stabilize. She said his glucose was 222, and the normal range is 60-120.

Scooter had a similar episode this weekend. He did not have a seizure but was completely out of it and drooling like crazy when we took him in. Thank goodness I did not supplement him with anything because for my little guy, it would have killed him. They tested his blood and his glucose was 267. The ER Vet was not sure if it was due to a bite or eating something. After a full night at the ER (we took him at noon on Sunday), he had stabilized and could come home. After tests and care, the vet decided he just ate something funny while in the yard at my parents house. That is the worst part, we are on vacation so we couldnt even go to our vet who has all of his records. It is super scary so I know exactly how you feel. Scooter is now back to his normal self (thankfully). We had a follow-up visit with my parents regular vet (they have a poodle) in the afternoon yesterday who confirmed the diagnosis by the ER Vet. Is your baby back to playing and having fun or are they still sick? Scooter slept all day and night yesterday which really helped him recover. This morning, it seems like nothing happened. Good luck to your baby! It sucks when they get sick!

I chose to have the full blood panel done as well as a number of other tests. It was expensive but Scooter is my baby and I would pay anything to keep him around. That may be why we know exactly what went wrong as well. I know you love your baby so maybe Rascal got into something like Scooter. I will never know what he got into but he is much better. In addition to tests, he had his stomach pumped. It sucks but I will say he bounced back quite well considering. He doesnt have any follow-up meds or anything. Did the doc you went to give you meds to take home?

No we didn't get any meds for him either. The vet said it was possible that my supplementing him helped his blood sugar get up to that level by the time we arrived at the ER vet. Little Rascal is only 4.5 months old and is only 2.8 lbs. It was so scary, I thought we were losing him. What was his diagnosis?
Rascal; was not 100 percent until a full 24 hours after this all started, by that evening though he was 100 percent, tearing up the house and wrestling with the other dogs. We tried to keep him calm but he was really wanting to play. I really hope it was a one time occurance because I was scared to death.

Per both vets, he just ate something in one of the planters outside while we were watering the plants. It could have been a natural berry or something that someone had thrown in the bushes trying to dispose of it (visitor may have thrown a piece of gum/candy/something). He is back to his energetic self now. I am super nervious about it all now because just like you, I do not want to go through that ever again.

I forgot to mention that per the second vet, Scooter now weighs 7.7 lbs. I know your baby is much smaller so that may have contributed to some symptoms. Scooter is also almost 2 years old.
