Morning Throw Up About 2 weeks ago, my 1 year old Biewer woke me about 4 am retching. He vomited some yellowish bile then went back to sleep. Later ate his complete breakfast and all was fine. Two days later he repeated the process and then almost daily since then. Always around 3 or 4 in the morning. I took his stool to the vet to check for parasites and it was negative. A little research led me to believe that he was simply not getting enough food later in the evening. I have found that if I feed him really late, like 11pm he is fine. Also, one morning I got up and fed him at 4 before he got sick and he was fine. But, I can't keep doing this. If I feed him late, he needs to get up to poop in the wee hours and if I don't feed him then he needs to get up to retch. I can't win! I am going to take him for blood work now to make sure his liver/pancreas are processing correctly, but wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar problem. |
Vomiting up bile in the early morning is a fairly common problem around here. As long as there aren't any underlying problems, experiment with giving a treat or two before bed. Rather than a full meal, a couple pieces of a treat may be enough to tide him over without filling him up enough to need to potty. |
Our will sometimes do that too if their tummies are empty. I think giving a snack before bedtime is good and helps until breakfast. |
OMG! I THOUGHT SNICKERS was the only one. he started doing that to around 5 every morning. last night i gave him a tablet that his pervious owenr gave me when got sick with vomiting and i gave it to him with a treat and he did not do it last night. It was probably more the treat. Thanks for the information. i love this site |
One of my girls does this too, the vet said she needs to eat little and often, its a common problem. I find a snack before bedtime has sorted this out.:) |

Mine get fed a snack at bedtime and then Pixie wakes me up at 1:30 so now I keep a biscuit in my nightstand drawer and give them each a piece and they go back to sleep |
Morning Throw Up I was at the vet last Friday asking about this very problem. I'm happy to say his advise correspond to all the suggestions above - late night snack, smaller meals more often in the day,etc. He also suggested I add "Protexin Soluble", a multi-strain probiotic powder safe for use on animals, to all food and water as this aids control of scours (diarrhea) of non-specific dietary origin and helps to boost immunity. Vomiting Lexi sometimes vomits. I thought she was very sick and took her to the Vet. He tells me that dogs are programmed to eat whatever they see and their stomach's will vomit up what they don't need. He also advised me to give her 1/2 of a Pepto Bismol CAPLET. He says this coats their stomach and is an anti-inflammatory. It worked like a charm and when she is in the yard I watch what she eats like bugs, grass, etc. |
Wow how weird Tia has started to do this too. Ive changed her feed to morning from evening and now a couple of nights in a row she has woken up very early hours and thrown up yellow bile. Giving her a snack tonight for sure. Thanks guys. |

Are you feeding higher protein? If not, that may help as proteins take much longer to digest than carbs. Maybe give a protein snack right before bed? |
