chicken-rice How much rice would be an appropriate amount to cook w/1 chicken breast without having way too much rice? Thanks! |
It really can be different for each dog. Is this diet for a sick dog? Or are you trying to start homecooking? |
I usually make mine half and half. For one chicken breast, probably 1 to 1 1/2 cups of rice. I don't think there is a magic formula. BTW mine would pick out all the chicken when I used white rice. When I switched to brown rice and made sure to chop the chicken in very fine pieces, they ate it all, no picking. |

I also put chicken bullion or broth instead of just straight water so the rice tastes extra chickeny. :) |
Thanks guys. No not doing homecooking. Just wanted to cook up a batch & freeze in small ziplocks to have on hand. Didn't want to have to run to store & get chicken if none in the house if/when I need it. Just couldn't remember anyone talking about how much of each item like 50/50 ratio or other. I think mincing the chicken in small pieces will help her to keep from picking out pieces better too. Does anyone ever add plain pumpkin to this mixture or is it better to just stick to the chicken & rice? When I gave the pumpkin to Roxy the first couple times she gobbled it right up & worked real well. Froze the remaining can in ice cube trays. Now she's not interested in it at all. What's up with that? Thanks! |
Ground chicken works really well if you can get a hold of that-- it can be mixed in very uniformly with the rice, and at least in my experience seems a bit easier for a sick dog to handle than chunks of chicken. |
I never added pumkin to it. I cooked ratio of 3-1 3 parts of rice to one part of chicken or hamburger, that after I cooked it I rinsed it throughly in water. It always did the trick. Rice is a good staple just to maintain weight. I had a friend tell me she fed her dogs a ver popular dog food made here in the Usa and no corn etc fillers, but her dog got so skinny being fed the recommended feedings daily she changed the food and he bulked back up to a healthy looking form. Vet informed her sometimes fertile males stay more on the lean side, but he was too lean as far as she was concerned. changing the food did the trick for her. I wish I could remember what was the original food and subsequent food. |
exactly what kind of chicken and what kind of rice and exactly how do you cook it? I think Tyler would LOVE this (= |

Do you only feed it to sick dogs mainly? |

But, chicken/rice is also a mainstay meal used by many homecookers, after it's balanced and everything. :) |
