Vitamin E and omegas for liver shunt For those giving their yorkies vitamin E, milk thistle, and/or omega 3s for liver shunts, where did you get these supplements and what kind of dosage do you give? Lacy is currently on dietary management and SAM-e alone, and we are considering surgery in a few months. In the meantime, I'd like to suggest some of these items to the vets, but I'm not sure if they have these items or know how much to prescribe. Her local vets are very nice and talented, and they care about Lacy, but they just don't know many specifics about this condition. Lacy is three and asymptomatic, but I'd like to give her everything we can to help. |
Roxy gets fish oil and water soluable vit E in her food. I contacted a Pet-Vet Nutritionist from Cornell University and purchased a special diet for needs. The diet cost $140 and is geared towards her liver issues. The extra liver support Supplements: * Hepatosupport (capsules)- contains milk thistle and B vitamins (substitute for Marin) * VetriDMG liquid (substitute for Denosyl) both available at HomeVetŠ Natural Pet Care -Nicole |
Omegas can be given for liver issues. You need to give enough DHA and EPA for it to be effective though. Some veterinary products are available or you can use a human supplement. Just make sure it's a reputable company that tests for potency and impurities. Hepatosupport is milk thistle with vitamins. Some prefer it to Marin because it doesn't contain liver or yeast. You can also use a milk thistle supplement meant for humans. I got Ellie's at the vitamin store. It should be given spread throughout the day (broken into at least three doses). Whenever giving either of these products, it's important to give vitamin e. It is also just a good thing to do for liver compromised dogs. When Ellie was on it she was taking 400IU daily. |
3V Caps skin and hair formula for dogs contains fish oil omega -3 fatty acid,(EPA and DHA), with vitamins A,D and E. |
my favorite is Welcome to Nordic Naturals omega 3 for pets as it is distilled so no mercury and they use anchovies and sardines which is safer and it has vitamin E in it as you need to supplement with vitamin E if giving omega 3 - this is the most pure fish oil i believe oh and never give cod liver oil as that is way too high in vitamin A for liver compromised dogs |
