need advise I live in Colorado & we dont have the flea problems. My husband died last week & I'm moving to Florida to be closer to family. So I need to know what I need to do for Isabella as far as heartworm & flea control. She is sensitive to any meds & I'm hesitant about toxic flea meds & heartworm control. Any help is appreciated. I will see a vet when I get there but dont want to give her harmful meds. Any suggestions. We will be in south Fla. I just had to put down my 17 year old Yorkie last week & my husband unexpectedly passed so I cant loose my baby. She is 5 lbs & very healthy. Thanks!! Patty |
First, I am so sorry to hear about your husband. What a terrible shock! I would normally recommend Frontline, but if your baby has sensitivities I would ask the vet first. Best of luck on your move! |

I use Interceptor as the heartworm, I use this bc my girl has liver issues and from my research I feel most comfortable with it, plus is comes in doses for the small babies. My Vet has recommended Frontline Plus and I too HATE to use it, but we have a bad tick problem here so I must :( Again, I am so sorry ~ I hope your family will give you some comfort :( :( :( P.S. I have family in Naples and it is really nice when I visit. |
I am so sorry to hear of your loss!:( I use sentenial on my baby but I would first check w/your vet. |
First off I am so sorry about your husband. Looks like alot of changes in your life all of a sudden. Sorry about your baby too. I know you must be going through alot right now. I personally don't put any chemicals on my dogs for fleas. I give Interceptor for heartworm only because I have too. Chemicals are horrible what they can cause. I would try to find a non toxic spray to treat your yard and I bathe mine in Dawn and then their regular shampoo. The breeder recommended Paul Mitchell's shampoo for pets because we just got a new baby Sunday. He is 13wks. old. Will pray for you that your move goes well without any complications and everything will work out great for you and your baby in Flordia. Hope you find a wonderful vet too. |
I'm so sorry to hear about you loss. i live in south florida frontline doesn't work as well as Advantage in this area. i tried frontine for a little while and my Sophie got fleas in a month or so. i went back to advantage. And I use Interceptor for heart worm. Fleas are a big problem here. What's area of south florida are you moving too? There is a florida group on here that you might what to join for vet ref Etc. Again sorry for your loss. |
First, I'm so sorry for your loss. There is a thread here somewhere about fleas and florida, I'll find it and post. Here you go! |
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and furbaby. I use frontline plus but I give it to her a day or two after the heartworm pill. I don't like giving her to much of anything at one time. |
florida flea & heartworm control I'm moving to jensen beach wihich is close to Stewart & Port St Lucie. Isabella eats organic food & I would hate to give her toxic chemicals. If anyone knows of a good vet (specializing in small dogs) in the area I would love the recommendation. Thanks again. Patty |

i am so sorry for ur loss of ur husband and your yorkie . |
I'm sorry for your loss. I live in Florida and we give our kids comfortis. It's a pill instead of a topical medication. It works great for us. Glad you're joining us and be prepared for some hot weather. |
Gingersmon; I did see your link & its on my very long "to do " list". I'm going to check into everything before I load her up with toxins. I'm looking forward to the warm weather & so is Izzy. We have been high in the Rockies for quite a while & visit Fla a few times a year. She absolutley loves the heat & so do I. My husband was born in Col & melted when we would visit family in Fla. So us girls are looking forward to our new journey. This will be as good move for her because she misses daddy terribly. I brought her to the vet yesterday & had her check up. She's having her teeth cleaned on friday. I pleaded with the vet to give her special attention. If anything happened to her, that would be it for me. They are great there & know my dogs well. I'm only 47 & a widow. Still in shock & it all happened too quickly. I'm hoping the beach & new surroundings, along with family will help me & Izzy heal. Thanks for all your kind words. Yorkie lovers are special people. We all know that. And they are so special. I couldnt make it without her. I've been a workaholic the past few years. Now its time to make "Yorkie friends" & realize whats important. Thanks again for all your kind words & support. It means so much to me. Patty |
Iwish you and your babie a safe trip!!! I know the area you are moving to. It is a very nice area a little quieter than we live. There are alot of yorkies around here. I know your baby will love playing outside all year round. I wish you and Izzy the best of luck in your new home!!! |
