Cleaning my Odie's Teeth Odie is scheduled to get his teeth cleaned at the dentist this week & I am very uncomfortable about this. When we rescued Odie back in 2006 he had his teeth cleaned & the vet had to remove three of his teeth. His teeth look white to me & my husband. Has anyone out there had their baby's teeth cleaned year after year? What about brushing them? Any type of help will be greatly appreciated. Should I have this uncomfortable feel about this? I haven't posted in months because my computer has been down, but I have a new one and I'm back in business. Thanks in advance for any help in regards to cleaning teeth. Welcome back ~ for my 2 pups - they have to have their teeth cleaned annually. Lucy is going on the 18th herself. I am going to a new vet this time & feel comfortable with their process & thoroughness (last vet didn't seem to do a good job at all). I brush their teeth, but need to do it more often.:( Even if their teeth are white, tarter can form under the gum line. If you are comfortable with your vet, the cleaning should be alright. Since your pup had his teeth cleaned in 2006, what food are you feeding him that his teeth are still white?? lol :) |
We do dentals on an as needed basis. Ellie's teeth are fine. She hasn't had a dental since 11/07. She will not have another one until 1) she is put out for something else or 2) she needs one. Tartar can form under the gum line but if everything visable looks okay, there may be no need to risk anesthesia. Yearly or twice yearly cleanings are fine if your dog's teeth are bad and/or you can't brush them but they are not necessary for every dog. |
I only do dentals if necessary as I don't like to have them under anesthesia. |
Thank You Thanks to all who answered regarding about my Odie going to have his teeth cleaned at the Vets. I canceled the appointment and I'm headed over to Petsmart to see if I can get some doggie tooth paste. A friend of mine has a Cairn Terrier and she said that she uses something that fits over her finger and she is able to keep her Wilbur's teeth clean that way. I'll give it a try. Also gauze or a baby toothbrush work well, depending on your baby's tolerance level :p |
Thanks :aimeeyork Thanks Sugarmama. I never thought of getting a baby toothbrush or using some gauze. The gauze would probably work way better than a toothbrush on Odie because he does not want you near his mouth. I have no idea how his groomer manages to trim him because when I groom him at home, when I try to brush his whiskers and beard, oh there is such a carry on. Thanks again.
