New here! Hi, Im new to the board! I just got my 'teacup' Yorkie, Maximillion (aka 'Max') for my birthday at the end of May! He was born 2.18.09 (he'll be 4 months soon) He was 1lb when we got him, he's about 2lbs now. The person we bought him from said to feed him 2x a day (AM & PM) Mixing 1/2 cup of dry food & 25% of a wet can of food each feeding, & to give him "TOMLYN, Nutri-Stat" vitamins 3x a day. (its a high calorie food supplement with omega acids) He's been doing good, pooping about 2x a day, peeing about 3 or 4x a day. He's happy, spunky & energetic. Just wondering if this seems like a good plan to you guys with experience. He's soo tiny, I worry about him a lot! Do you think it would be okay to stop feeding him the wet food & just stick to dry now? Or is there a certain age he has to be? thanks guys!!:animal-pa |
Also, Do you think since hes so little he needs to eat more often? (should I leave food out so he can eat when he wants) Or do you think the vitamins take care of that? & are the vitamins just a 'teacup' thing or a puppy thing? or a forever thing?:animal-pa thanks!!! |
Welcome to Yorkietalk! I don't have tinies so am not sure my experiences will be of help. There are many here who do though, and I'm sure they will be along with great advice soon. Congrats on your new addition! |
Welcome to YorkieTalk Just wanted to say Hi and welcome you to YorkieTalk....I havent been on in a while. But I'm back as well. On advice I can't really help you...but i'm pretty sure you can find somebody that can answer your questions. |
A 2 pounder does need to eat at least 3-4 times a day or you can free feed. If he is eating the dry very well, he does not need canned. It won't hurt though. One half cup of food per feeding for a dog of his size sounds like too much to me. Maybe give him the cup a day you are feeding now and just break it into more meals? If he is eating a food that is AAFCO approved for puppies, he should not need vitamins at all because the food is full of them. If you give too many extra vitamins, it can actually throw off the balance of the food. Nutrical or Nutristat is okay but if the pup is eating very well, you probably don't need to give it. It is best that that is balanced out with protein anyway. Anyway, it's a debated subject on whether or not to give this kind of product often but it is something you could talk to his vet about. |
Welcome and congrats on your baby. I would feed more often as he is tiny. If you feed more often he may not need the supplement 3 times a day. Just watch for any signs of hypoglycemia if he is very active or isn't eating well. |
