Why can't Jemma eat Bully Sticks???? She vomits them up all the time. When they chew it for awhile and it's soft, it looks like pieces of fat hanging off. But after she eats that piece of fat, within 10 minutes she vomits it up. What gives with that?? Carol and Jemma |
Hi Carol...Jemma's stomach may be senstive to bully sticks. I gave Buddy a bully stick...and he ended up with bloody mucous poops. Took Buddy to the vet, and when I mentioned that he had a bully stick, the vet said that it was most likely the cause. He told me that in little dogs, bully sticks tend to upset their stomachs. I have a maltese who is unaffected by them, so i guess it depends on how sensitive each dog is. Since Jemma throws them up, I would advise not to give them to her anymore. I have not given Buddy nor Lilu bully sticks since Buddy got sick, even though they love them. |
What brand are you using? I really like the Merrick brand, I did a little research on them, and found that there is a lot of difference on how they are processed and preserved. The drying of the sticks is very important because many brands don't use artificial preservatives and drying properly is what preserves them. Also those that use artificial preservatives have expiration dates, and that mean that they are no longer considered safe to eat after a certain time, and some dogs could even be sensitive to the artificial preservative used. Bully sticks should be extremely lean, what you are seeing isn't fat, but the way the tendon looks when it softens. Vomiting is a good sign that there is bacterial contamination on the sticks or that they have something used in the processing of them that disagrees with her tummy. I would throw them out. |

I knew they were a bull's penis. They are kind of shriveled aren't they. Must be baby ones:rolleyes: I just looked at the Merrick brand. They have over 70% protein, that's not too much?? I use the ones here from, is it AMD?? Something like that |
I believe that they are all mostly protein with a tiny amount of fat, and some fiber and moisture. Crude Protein (Min.) 79.00% Crude Fat (Min.) 1.30% Crude Fiber (Max.) 1.00% Moisture (Max.) 13.00% I think some people think they are actually the whole penis, this is not true. They cut strips of tendon from the penis; I think tendon is like muscle. This is washed and sanitized, and dried. I have not personally bought AMD's bully sticks, and I don't know her supplier, but many people here have used them and recommend them. They probably have the same amount of protein as the Merrick brand. I know with the Merrick brand, since they are very hard they don't eat the stick, they chew on it, and one stick lasts a whole week, so I’m not concerned about the amount of protein he's getting, as it's just a little additional supplement each day, and his regular food isn't that high in protein. |
