Carrots & Chlorine I just got my July issue of Shop Smart magazine (Consumer report). There is an article which states baby carrots, some whole carrots and other vegetables are treated with chlorine. It also says Manufacturers often treat produce, even the organic kind with a mild chlorine solution to disinfect it and extend it's shelf life. The concentration is supposed to be tiny compared to products like household cleaners and pose no risk to humans. It goes on to say if you want to avoid chemicals buy produce off the farm stand or try growing your own. Glad I never paid extra for the organics. Am I the only one who didn't know even organics were treated? |
I dont purchase the carrots in a bag for this reason, they are either soaked or sprayed with chlorine to keep them fresh.. |
"Organic" is such a broad term that nothing really surprises me about it. They may not use man made chemicals but I'm not so sure that they can't use natural compounds that are not safer... |
 OMG so it's not ok to give them baby carrots then??? |
we no longer buy baby carrots- only the real deal |
I wouldn't say they aren't safe. It's really personal preference. If you don't have your own well or fresh spring water, it has probably been treated with chlorine also and most dogs get that... |
Let's see -- a little chlorine diluted in water or E.coli  from the farm hands that picked them, packed them on the truck, etc........ I think I will take my chances with a little chlorine. I scrub mine pretty good before eating anyway. They might absorb a little but it is in our drinking water too. Not to mention how much we absorb in the pool. |
I get the very small packages from my school cafeteria (about 8-10 baby carrots) and my lil one has never had any reaction to them....she loves them...she goes into her vet for her 2 1/2 yr check up this month so I will be asking him about this....Thank you for the heads up......, |
Yikes!!!! Toby loves them as well. You all make good points though. I will definitely be checking with the vet. Thanks for the info! This is why I love YT! |
