Am I Feeding her Enough? Bridget doesn’t seem to like to eat until the evening – 7:30/8:00pm. I’ve tried feeding her in the morning – she ignores it. Tried leaving dry food out all day – she’ll maybe nibble at it a bit, but nothing major. In the evening I give her 1/2 cup or so of dry food with a tablespoon of ceasar mixed in and she chows it all down. Plus she gets treats here and there for being a good girl like trainer snacks, apple pieces, banana, cheese, etc. She doesn’t appear like she’s starving – she’s 14 months and weights just under 4 lbs. It seems to be a good schedule for her – especially with potty training. I just want to be sure she’s getting enough food. Any thoughts? |
If her weight is good for her and she isn't acting starving when you feed her - go with what works !! I leave food down for mine but what works for me doesn't mean it would work for you - I would continue to feed her as you are and just make sure she always has fresh water and she'll let you know if she needs more - Good luck ! |
If she eats the whole 1/2 Cup of food then you are ok. I feed Millie 2 x a day, but she only gets 1/8 Cup of food in the am and in the p.m. with training snacks in between. I don't even free feed her and she is doing fine and gaining weight. She is only 4 1/2 months old. Everyone keeps saying how small their bladders are; it goes to reason so is their stomachs. I always tend to want to put more food in the bowl, because it looks like too little food, but Millie will only eat what she wants and walks away from the rest, so I guess she knows what she needs. Besides, at some age, dogs should be reduced to only one meal a day, or at the least, 2 - 1/2 portions a day. ETA: Millie is 3 lbs 4 oz. |
Don't worry Tatia, Bridget is a very healthy looking girl, no starvation there. Well you mentioned that leaving food out for her, didn't do much and she only nibbled but that's pretty much wht they do. Maybe she's just not a morning dog..hehe...Try leaving a little bit of food for her while you're gone. I used to count the kibbles that I put in Coco's bowl, so that I would know how much she had eaten while I was gone. Of course, as you know from personal experience, I have a little piggie and I don't have to count or worry anymore. I would try free feeding, but she looks and acts healthy to me. By the way, I've heard that bananas are not so good for them because they cause bowel issues, like constipation. So just heads up on that one. :D Coco sends Bridget kisses and hopes she'll see her at the park tonight. |
Samson is the same way. I leave food for him all day but he usually doesn't eat anything until later in the evening. I think it's because we are gone all day so he probably sleeps most of the time. When we get home he wants to play and then around 7:30 or 8:00 he decides to get something to eat. As long as she's eating at some point in the day/night I would think she'll be fine. |
