This is what my mom's Yorkie Buster was diagnosed with and had to have surgery on Friday. He is doing well. He has to eat Hill's UD for the rest of his life. Nothing else not even treats. Have any of you experienced this? Is it hereditary? Is there anything else that he can eat? The vet said no but I was wandering if surely there can be something out there for just a little treat. He's only 2. Thanks for any suggestions.

We had a 7yr.old female that had these stones. She had surgery and the vet put her on lifetime Sience diet,UD for life, she lived until she was 16. We gave her baby carrots as a treat and the vet said that was ok. nothing with calcium like, milk,cheese, etc. I am sure there is some kind of treat he could have even if it had to be homemade, there's lots of recipes online for dog treats. I would check out all the sites and then show him what you found. BitsyBaby (RIP) lived a happy life on her special, I have to confess that she did get a few treats along the way but we were careful nt to over do it.. she went blind at about 14-15 but did fine getting around in both our homes, our daughters home and everywhere else she went with us, we just used coke boxes to block off any dangerous areas. If she bumper into something she would just back up and go a different way, was actually quite endearing and we loved her dearly till the very end(as teats roll now) and it waas 8-3-07. sorry got off the point... good luck, I think your baby will be just fine and will adjust to the new diet, on 1 thing we did do, heat the food up if it's been in the fridge, I even kinda fried some ofe it for a different texture and even sometimes alittle crunchy. That was just for a treat because cooking it takes out some of the nutrients..... GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS you and your Baby... SHaron

Hi My little male had this surgery done 2 x in 6 months. Im thinking the first time they may not have got all of them out. anyways hes doing great now and is also on U/D prescription food. and bottled water. I think the bottled water is a must. it seems to be better for him. I also do treats watermelon, carrots, cheerios. and yes I still give him little bites of turkey lunch meat, boiled chicken and rice. but not all the time.

My dog Simon has been on UD for about 3 years; Simon loves treats so it was very hard for us to adjust to him only having dog food. Unfortunately, Simon has had to have bladder surgery 3 times so I have become very strict with his diet I used to cheat and give him cheerio's, but I had to stop. So what I do now is make treats or as we call them "cookies" out of his dry food - it is so simple but smells very bad, but I make a fresh batch once a week or so and it works out great and he loves them.

I take 3 cups of dry food; put it in a blender (grind)
put in a bowl add 1.5 cups of water
dash of cinnamon
mix together
I usually buy the disposable tin bake ware 8x8 pan
bake at 425 for 45 minutes
I cut them like small brownies

He goes crazy over them (it smells awful) but I suck it up for my baby- Unfortunately Simon's stones are not caused just because of poor diet he also has Cushing's Disease and they believe that is why he has reoccuring stones so we treat the Cushing's and stay on a strict diet and hope for the best!

My Cody also had bladder stone surgery. He is on Hills U/D. However, there is a prescription treat made by Hills that allows him to have treats. They are like a large Milk bone so I cut them into small pieces so he can have more throughout the day.

Could you tell me what kind of treats they are? I have asked my veterinarian about prescription treats and he said they did not make them for Calcium Oxalate Stones, I have also checked the Hills website before (a while back) and it had said the same - hopefully, it is something new that will work for us and I wont have to bake cookies anymore.

It just says Hills Prescription, canine treats. My vet just said to only let him have about 3 a day. That is why I cut them into smaller pieces. I don't think they are U/D specific buy my Vet said they were acceptable.
