Pro Plan or Royal Canin? Here in Mexico we don't have the plethora of choices that you do in the US. My vet can get Pro Plan and Royal Canin and I might even be able to make an order, but those (other than the crap from teh supers) are my only choices. When we go back to the US for a visit in August, I might try to smuggle some "good" stuff back, but certainly not a year's worth. So, it would make sense (to me, at least) to add to what is lacking in the food here. Can anyone give me a pointer on where to look for this information? I'm thinking of adding beef or soemthing to either ProPlan or RC as they appear to be light on protein. I can't go all homemade as I can't get the supplements here. Maybe I'll do that when we're back in the US - should be easier to get a year of supplements than a year of food. Any ideas? |
DEFINITLY Royal Canine- NO question at all- it is such a better food than pro plan. And as long as the meat you are adding in is not more than 10% of what he is eating you can add anything- but i would not add beef as it can be high in fat- i'd go with chicken or turkey breast or fish. |
i think it's a good idea to get supplements here in the US when you visit. you can look into prey model diet, there is a sticky at the top of this section. read and see how you feel about it. because if you feel ok with it, then you would be able to get what you need in mexico i am sure. :D |
Royal Canin is a pretty good food as far as the ingredients. The only reason it is ever frowned upon is because corn is in it and some dogs have allergies to corn. |
Definitely would pick Royal Canin over Pro Plan. |
Definitely go for the RC over Pro Plan. You could maybe get a big bag of food when you come to the US and mix 50/50 with the RC. |
If you think dog should eat grains rather than meat than just go for these 2..never mind which one |

Joey's been on Royal Canin and is doing great on it. I've tried switching, (we have too many choices here!), and always go back to the RC, last food switch caused massive eye drainage! While RC is not super high in protein, some experts believe that that is best. Joey eats Bully Sticks for his teeth, they are a hard chewing stick, and are made of all lean protein, so I feel like this supplements the protein, and I also give him beef liver treats, I make myself. If your dog has no problems with corn this seems to be a good food. Corn can cause extreme itchiness in some dogs. From what I've read, RC has excellent quality control, and that's also a major factor in my choosing them. |
thanks everyone. the only RC stuff is prescription stuff (Obesity, Hepatic, etc.) but there is also a Chihuahua type also that I can check into. I had initially not even considered the "prey" model because I assumed it was raw (and we have children so I'm not wanting to expose them to raw via the dog). I'll check the thread though. Thanks! |

To be really honest, if I had to pick between RC and Pro Plan, I'd go for the Salmon and Brown Rice formula Pro Plan. Unlike RC, it does not contain any corn and is gluten free. It's really only that ONE specific formula that I would go with over the RC though-- otherwise, RC would win out. I generally don't like either of those brands to be really honest-- too pricy for too many fillers. |

The regular Pro Plan...no, but I've never seen the ingredients in this one and I don't know where either brand is manufactured. |
I use Proplan Sensitive Skin and Stomach because its primary ingredients are Salmon, rice and oats. The Salmon is great for their coats, and it has no wheat or corn in it, which dogs are allergic to sometimes. My dogs have been eating it for 2 years, and that's all except for the occasional treat. They still love it! |
