Upper Respiratory Infection I have had my babies for almost a month now. When I brought them home, they began coughing. I took them to the vet and he diagnosed them with an upper respiratory infection. They were placed on Amoxicillin .05 on the dropper twice a day. Ten days later they were still coughing and so the vet gave them another round of antibiotics. I am going to take them back as soon as the antibiotic is gone, but they are still continuing to cough. The breeder told me that there had been an episode of kennel cough that had affected some of the puppies. My question is will they ever get over this cough. I am afraid they will injure their tracheas if they continue coughing. Has anyone experienced this with their babies? Hoping for a response. Thanks, Lynda |
The anti biotic isn't really to treat the cough. It's a preventative against pneumonia. The cough can linger quite awhile. You can use a warm mist vaporizer with vick's in it...or take them into a steamed filled bathroom and that helps a great deal. A teaspoon of honey soothes irritated throats too. |

It can take up to 6-8 weeks for kennel cough to clear (sometimes longer :(), esp. in pups. If they start coughing terribly hard, if it begins to interfere w/ their sleep - your vet can prescribe a cough suppressant - which would be good if the cough gets too bad. |
