A scare during spay surgery... When I took Lola in for her spay surgery, she had a reaction to the induction drug (a barbituate)... her heart rate fell really fast so they didn't perform the surgery. The vet said that if she'd had a broken leg, for example, he would have continued, but since it was an elective surgery he didn't want to take the chance that she wouldn't pull through. They did all the pre-op bloodwork and everything came back fine, so apparently she just doesn't tolerate barbituates well. I am scared silly to try the surgery again (with a different type of induction drug), even though the vet said that this type of reaction is not uncommon in small dogs (she's only 2.5 pounds). I just wondered, has anyone else had this problem or heard of someone who has? Do you think that the risks of the surgery outweight the risks of not having her spayed (pregnancy, multiple cancers, etc.)? |
Whether for spaying or future dental etc. you can't avoid putting them under, unfortunately. I have never experienced any problems with any surgeries in my 35 years of owning Yorkies. I have had three very small ones done in the last two months. One was just done yesterday with no problems. Baby teeth were pulled at the same time in each case. Arielle had fourteen baby teeth pulled and spay and she weighted at nine months old at 2.8 pounds. The next say you couldn't hold her down. Unbelievable! I am nervous every time they go under. I cannot stress enough, know you doctor!!!!! Good Luck. |
Maybe you could be referred to a specialty vet who has a hospital set up and board certified surgeons so if she were to have any reactions they would be better equipped to handle it. I had to have Cali spayed this way and she also had a liver biopsy. They couldn't pull her retained puppy teeth because her temp started to drop. I hope you can safely get her spayed. |
What barbituate was it? Most of the time, these should not be used. I think Propofol is one though which would be an exception. What were they going to use for maintenance? |
