Canine Dental Vaccination Has anyone heard of this or tried it? I plan to ask my vet about but I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about it. The vaccination, developed by Pfizer Animal Health, can be administered by veterinary surgeons to act as a protective measure against the development of canine periodontitis - advanced gum disease. Thanks, Kathy |
I've been trying to find out more about this also. I will be very curious to see what's shared. |
I've never heard of it, but I'd be interested to know more about it. |
Their site has information about it. Is there something in particular that you want to know about it? It is another non-core vaccine that should not be recommended in most cases. It is new and the long-term side effects are not known. It is killing bacteria but whether or not that should all be killed by a vaccine is the question. It does not take the place of tooth care, so your dog(s) may still need a dentals. You will also need to continue to brush. So until we have some real information on it, it won't be coming near any animal of mine unless that animal had dental disease and dentals or teeth brushing were not an option. |
I have heard of it but am not interested. It's still too early to say what side effects may occur and to put yet another chemical into Bud's body does not interest me. Brushing daily and petzlife once a week does the trick for us. |
I don't believe in giving this vaccine. I'm not aware of any real proof of safety and efficacy. Overvaccination is thought to be a major cause of all the dental issues we now see in dogs - so to give yet another vaccine just doesn't make sense to me at this point, expecially in the absence of studies. |
I was out and happened to be driving past my vet's office so I stopped in and asked what she thought. She told me just what others have posted. They don't recommed it, which is why she has never brought it up. She hasn't seen where it has been effective and it will not replace good dental hygeine. Kathy |

I do really love my vet and feel very fortunate to have found her. She's not all in for the money. It's very apparent she's in for the animals. I will tell you something that I thought was appalling that I ran into Memorial Day. My son has a Min Pin and we had to take her to emergency care since the regular vet was closed and she seemed to be running a fever and ill and we didn't know why. I was filling out the papers (My son just graduted from high school last week so he still lives at home) and one question was: Check one: 1: I want the best care available 2: I want the best care available but I have financial considerations 3: I would like minimal care for my animal Doesn't everyone want the best care and doesn't everyone NO MATTER how much money they have have financial considerations??? I don't want anything unnecessary done but I don't want my pet to die either. Maybe it's just me, the question was like WOW! I get the business end of it but.... I haven't lived in this town long but I think I will look and see if there is another emergency place. |

Imagine if you were at a Pedatric clinic and one of the choices was: 3. I would like minimal care for my child :thumbdown |

If there were other problems with the place, I'd go elsewhere, but personally wouldn't find a different clinic just based on that one question. |

This came up in a discussion with my vet as well. They do not recommend it - it is too new and who knows the long term side effects?. |

I'm not sure that I'd like for Ellie's vet office to ask a question like this but at least they aren't wasting time trying to figure out how far the owner wants to go. There are people who take their animals to the vet and say, "It's just a dog." There is nothing the vet can do about it either. And some people don't have financial considerations. They would just as soon charge it and pay it off monthly if it means their dog's life. |
Yorkiemomhs, I'm so glad for you that you have a vet that is using extreme caution when it comes to using this vaccine.... A while back I took a look around for any info on this vaccine and I didn't like what little I was finding. For one thing it is full formaldehyde and you still have to do daily brushing and do dental cleanings so what's the point. The vaccine was tested on 8 month old pups and declared a success. I had to wonder just how much tarter does a 8 month old have??? Here are some other peoples experience from the vaccine: We Just Had Our Yorkie Vaccinated With The Porphyromonas Vaccine For... - Blurtit This is a paragraph from an article on Dr. Doolittler's site: "Elizabeth is a four-pound Yorkie of indescribable sweetness. Six weeks ago, after significant research and consultation, we began using Pfizer’s new periodontal disease vaccine. Two injections later we had two sick dogs. Both were painful all over, a vaccine reaction known as myalgia (muscle soreness). One recovered, but Elizabeth’s morphed into something even more sinister: polyarthritis. Now Elizabeth’s joints hurt even when she’s not moving. Clusters of immune complexes are likely deposited around her joints, eliciting wincing pain when she’s not medicated with steroids. This kind of vaccine reaction is uncommon—so much so that Pfizer is having a hard time accepting that their product is the source of the reaction. Still, the vaccine’s two for two at our place. Both dogs got sick the day after the vaccine. We sent it back. Maybe it was the batch? " A typical response from a pharmaceutical company, deny, deny, deny....... |
