dewclaws...is it too late to have them removed i have a 5.5 month old yorkie and when i got him he still had his dewclaws. i plan on having him neutered and was wondering if it's possible for the vet to remove the dewclaws at the same time. |

Oh absolutely! I have one that had a dewclaw grow back. I had it removed when I had her dental at about 7 months. She was sore for about a day or two. But, did just fine. I have another one that came with both her dewclaws and I am having them removed when she is 10 months along with any residual teeth. Good luck with your baby!!! |
Yes, I've read of several people having it done when the dog was undergoing a spay or neutering surgery, and it turned out fine. This is something I would want done, I heard of older dogs catching them on something and tearing them off, and it was quite traumatic for the dog and the owner. |

I had Doodlebug and Bogey's removed during their neuter. D-Bugs was 5 months old when he had it done on his front paws. Bogey was almost 2 yrs old (he's a rescue) but his were dangling and I was afraid they would get caught on something and cause a real problem. They were neutered at the same time and they each had 1 little stitch on each paw and they didn't seem to be in pain afterward. |
:eek::eek::eek: Laci has dew claws, I guess Im going to have to ask to have them removed when she is spayed next month! |
yea, my baby is going to have to get a few operations...on top of his neuter, he's going to have to get his dewclaws removed and probably some baby teeth. i don't want to have to put him under multiple times. i'm thinking of doing this when he's about 7 months...does that sound like the right age to you folks? |
It sounds like the right age. Cash went for his neuter, teeth and microchip when he was about 6/7 months old. June is going for her teeth, microchip and dew claw removal at 6 months. Cash still has his dewclaws, but I am having June's removed since the nails show a tendency to grow into the skin. I cut their nails every two weeks and I noticed these hook-like nails. So, off they go. I don't want them to get caught on something or the nails to grow into the skin. |
