Mucus in stool A little background... Penny has had tiny amounts of mucus in her stools on and off since we got her, I think. We left for the weekend back in June and she stayed with some friends and their two labs. When we got home, that evening she began having diarrhea. The next morning her stool was loose with blood and mucus. Rushed her straight to the vet. He diagnosed her with colitis, put her on W/D food for a few weeks, and she came out of it. He said it was most likely due to anxiety which makes sense because she can become very anxious fairly easily. Now and then, she'll have the tiny bits of mucus again, but nothing to cause alarm... until last night. (SORRY to be graphic) Her stool was slightly soft, unusually large (girth-wise) for her, and the end of the stool, say 1 1/2 inches, was covered in a sleeve of mucus. By the way, she messed in the house which is why I could see such detail. Should I be worried? Do I wait until she has a stool this morning to check it and see if the mucus is there again? Any suggestions? Oh, and she had her first bordatella vaccination yesterday, but I didn't think that would have anything to do with this. |
It might be that her anal glands supressed because of the large size of the stool...I would watch her close and if it keeps happening maybe a trip to the vet to ease your worries. |
TJ has the same problem (IBD). He has a very sensitive stomach. I just changed their food to IVD Potato and Duck. (Under the Vets Instructions). B/C TJ probably has a food allergy or is eating things around the house that bother his digestive track, plus he eats poop. Called the vet After typing up the post, I got even more worked up about it so I went ahead and called the vet. He suggested putting her on w/d for three to four days since that's the only symptom she's having at this time. If she doesn't get better, he'll need to see her. I'm also worried because we are leaving for our honeymoon in a little over a week, and she's going to be boarded for the first time. I was already concerned about her having problems with the colitis again. Now I'm even more worried. She's probably sensing our stress/busy levels right now. At least we are boarding her at the vet so if there are any problems, she can be treated immediately. |
