Does anyone know of a food specialist to refer to me? Does anyone know of a food specialist to refer to me? Bailey has IBS and I'm having a heck of a time with it lately. I feel I need to switch foods. I want to talk to a food specialist, rather than JUST the vet. Isn't there a really good one on here??? |
Most universities with a vet school have veterinary nutritionists on staff. You can pay to talk to them. What foods have you tried though? IBS/IBD can be very difficult to treat with food alone in some cases. What has been going on? Any drugs tried? Do you want to homecook or do you want dog food? Ellie has IBS-type symptoms also and we are playing with diet as well. |
Woof & Whimsy Ask for the owner, she is a dog nutritionist, I know its long distance but she would be glad to speak with you , I believe her name is Sue, there is also an email address on that site if you want to email her directly , she is very very knowledgeable and IM sure she will help you! |
I don't want to cook his food, I'd rather buy dog food... :) His IBS consists of diarrhea. When he gets himself really worked up he'll have diarrhea and if he has anything other than his food, that causes bathroom problems for at least 2-3 days. I just feel so bad for him. Within the past 2 weeks he's been going through diarrhea on and off and he hasn't gotten anything but his food. I have moved back in with my mom, so it could be the change from not being at my boyfriends house but I've heard Science Diet isn't good for Dogs who have IBS anyway. I'd like to get a Nutritionists opinion. |
I use Dr. Remillard out of Angell if that helps any. It sounds like he is fine as long as he is on his own food and he doesn't get worked up, so switching foods may not do any good. If you do want to try and switch, there are some good IBD diets available. On that may work is Natural Balance Duck and Potato. Purina HA is a very unique, soy based food that Ellie is on currently. It isn't working for us but does seem to have potential. We will be going to Z/D Ultra now. If we can't find a food to work, the next step is intestinal biopsy. So your vet is saying it's IBD? Have they given you Metronidazole or Tylan to try? Has a fecal for giardia been done? Is the blood work normal? |
No he's never been put on any medications, i've always monitored it with food. No fecal for Giardia has been done b/c it's only on and off with food. If I give him plain white rice, his stool is nice and solid. So I know it's just the food... I've been thinking about switching foods too to Natural balance. Isn't duck real greasy tho? |

The fat content seems low though and this food has helped many dogs with allergies and there is one report on their site about it being good for IBD. |
When Marcel had digestive issues (severe...and could not be helped by vet) as a puppy, consulted w/ Susan Davis (Susan Davis) and she was WONDERFUL. Can't recommend her highly enough - she will do consults over the phone. :) |
I don't eat it either, except when I was tricked into eating it once and I almost vomited it right back up right after I was told. I knew something wasn't right. The only thing I remember is how greasy it was! Ugh, I can't believe I ate it!!! Thanks for all your input! I'm going to have to talk with a nutritionalist and his vet and see what's best for him. I know having bathroom probs. regularly isn't tho! |

Wow i am learning here, my baby has BAD diarrhea if she eats anything else but Z/D prescrition allergen food...we had done a bunch of test with the vet and didnt know what she had they put ehr on that food and she is fine...so since then that is all she can eat. may i ask a question what is: IBS & IBD?? after Bailey was alright with her prescription food we never did further research since that food worked well for her? |
IBS is Irritable Bowel Syndrome... It's the same that humans can get... :( I would google it for more specifics, but it's not fun to live with. I actually have it myself... my dog takes after me...LOL! |
Oh my gosh that is totally what Bailey has...this answers so many of my questions... is it possible to cure it?? and is it normal that after i brought her home and she was sick that i started to get sick a little bit??? |
When my Bichon (since passed at 17 1/2) was diagnosed with IBD the vet put him on Wellness Whitefish and Potato |
