Drsfostersmith has medicine listed for dogs bones. Maybe trying one of their remedies could help Bear's leg. Not too expensive so maybe try it before seeking other more expensive alternatives.

I am a nurse...yes, furosamide it powerful stuff......I gave some to my 65 # greyhound after her stroke...but the vet let me keep her home and monitor her......it isw a common medicine used for congestive heart failure and I do know of some yorkies (or small dogs) on it.....but tiny little doses!

Maybe you can fix Bear a ramp onto and off the couch and all.....try to make things as easy as possible....so he won't strain or even injure the sore leg!

I am so sorry to hear about your little Bear and will be praying that he recover from all his problems.

About his knee problem, I don't know if this will help, but wanted to offer a suggestion. My sister had a little yorkie, Rhett Butler, whom I loved with all my heart and soul. In his later years, he got so crippled up with knee problems and my sister started giving him MSM Glucosamine. She got it from her groomer and it was in liquid form and each day we would mix it with a little cottage cheese and he'd eat it. It was amazing the improvement little Rhett showed. Before he could hardly walk and in no way could go up or down stairs. I don't remember how long it was after starting the glucosamine, but that little sweetheart started running all around...up and down stairs and acted as if he had no pain anymore. I can't say for sure that this would also help little Bear, but it would sure be worth a try. It was not the stuff the humans take, but one made especially for dogs. If you would like more information on names or brands, just let me know and I will call that groomer and find out for you, or my sister may remember exactly.

I think it is terrible that vet gave Bear medicine that was so bad for him. You'd think if she didn't know what to presribe, or the dosage, that she'd do a little research before giving him something that could kill him!

Woodrow/Woody is recovering from a similar problem as "Ilovebear"
 

My 13 year old Yorkshire Terrie/Woodrow, has a similar problem, and is recovering from a near death experience. For several days I noticed he started drinking water excessively, and using the bathroom all day & night. One morning he started coughing constantly. He had trouble walking and he looked at us as if in a daze. He couldn't raise his leg to potty and would fall to the ground and just sit there. For three days he stopped eating and lost a lot of weight, (He use to weigh 12 lbs., but weighed a little over five pounds. The doctor said he had congestive heart failure and discussed putting him to sleep, but this wasn't an option. He was sent home on Enalapril, Lasix, Cough pills, and strong pain pills, but the next day he was worse, so further blood work revealed renal failure. Woody was hospitalized and put on an IV with medication, to flush out his kidneys, for four days. The doctor didn't think there was much hope; but, after 36 hours, blood tests showed a BIG improvement, plus he was eating "NF Purina," canned dog food. On the fifth day he was released and sent home on: "Pimobendan, Azodyl Capsules, cough medication," and taken off the initial medications. A BIG IMPORTANT FACT: We are forbidden to give him HUMAN FOOD, and only eat NF Purina, for his kidneys. All of Woodrow's life I've cooked for him, and recently used garlic, and onion seasonings, to entice him to eat, but these seasonings are extremely toxic and harmful. To help him eat dog food, I'm to put his food down for 30 min's., then take it up if he doesn't eat, and do this three times daily. Once he eats, reward him with a safe snack or treat. It's been over a week now and Woody is like a puppy, running about, barking and playing. His last checkup revealed his gained a pound and he's beginning to eat the dog food.....yeah! By the way, the doctor did say, there was "Divine Intervention," on his behalf, and I believe prayer helped. I will be praying for ILOVEBEAR. God bless you and your baby.
