Help!!! crystals in urine! =( Okay. so Boots is 18 wks and paper trained... everyday I put a new set of newspapers for him.. but this morning, I noticed crystals in one of the areas he had peed on (it was dry)!!! but he hasnt been acting any different. I havent changed his food either. He peed again, and there were no crystals in that area. This may be gross.. but I had to do it... So then I swiped my finger to feel how it felt. and they're smaller than salt. Sorta softer. but really glass looking, though they do not feel like glass... any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated, I am soo scared!! oh yes, and right now, I want to take him to the vet but my brother took my car! thank you. |
He needs to go to the vet for a urinalysis and possible culture. The type of crystal needs to be identified so that treatment can start. |
Yes, take him to the vet it could be a liver shunt. |
Boots absolutely needs a bile acids test as soon as he reaches twenty weeks as crystals in urine is one of the symptoms: PSVA and MVD Research Summary |
thanks... but was it something i couldve done to cause this??? aaahhh.i feel so BAD:( |
If it's a liver shunt no you could not have caused it. |

No, you didn't cause it. Just take him to the vet and see what he says. |

If the underlying cause is a shunt (and it may not be), that is genetic and your breeder should be brought into this. Do they bile acids test their adult dogs before breeding? Are their lines clear of liver shunt and microvascular dysplasia? Do you have a health guarantee? |
you poor thing... i would feel bad too! i will keep you in my thoughts and prayers! please keep us posted!!! |
AAAHHHH.... I just called the breeder... but she doesnt understand what I am saying since she speaks mostly spanish. What I heard about the parents is that they were from a good line with no health issues. Boots looked super healthy from the start. There was a 48 hour to check if his health was good. also. he is AKC registered. |

I'm not sure if I do, we really didnt talk about the year health guarantee since she assured me time after time that her puppies were healthy and she did not have any complaints... But thank you so much. and Ill [try] to relax, I just cant imagine my babyBoots being sick, going to the vet for anything other than vaccines... he hates those needles as it is... ugh! Please keep him in your prayers and hope that is nothing too serious. Thankyou! |
This may sound like a dumb question.... but have you seen his dried pee before? sometimes when pee dries it looks crystallized. Is it that kind of crystals or bigger/ different? |

Reputable breeders follow the YTCA rules and keep Yorkie puppies until they are 12 weeks old. The YTCA also requires breeders to do genetic screening and health testing. Since you got Boots at seven weeks old, I doubt if his breeder did any health testing. Did you make a vet appointment? |
