Stinky Stinky Hey all, I'm feeding my little Sparky the Innova EVO for adults and his breath is SO bad...not to mention, the odors coming out of the other end aren't too pretty either!!! The gas this little guy lets out in the evening would be enough to make someone roll over in their grave!! I'm guessing its due to the high protein content in the Innova EVO.... Lately, he's also had some mild diarrhea - but I'm wondering if that is from stealing food from his brother's automatic feeder (my lhasapoo had a liver shunt, successfuly surgery 11/10/09 and he gets the Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14). I think Sparky is jealous that his brother gets many meals automatically in his feeder and he's sneaking and sharing with Chewy -- so maybe the diarrhea is from eating some of his brother's food? Anyone ever deal with their Yorkie all of a sudden having issues with his food after eating it for a good 3-4 months with no problems at all? I'm just wondering if it is worth it to switch -- considering switching out the Innova EVO for the Royal Canin Yorkshire kibble...and maybe adding a wet food, like the Fresh Pet Select brand items.... Thoughts??? Tania, Chewy (lhasapoo) & Sparky (crazy Yorkie) |
Hi there, you might get more responses if you make your own thread. Not too many people will see your post w/in this thread.;) Yes, Evo is high in protein & their #2 will be stinky. If your pup is doing well on it, I wouldn't switch. Eating too much can give them softer stools, but diarrhea is entirely something else. Please have him checked by a vet. |
Well....diarrhea might be the wrong word....poops are hard at first, and toward the end, super soft. Sometimes, with some getting stuck on his hair around his rear end....so not really diarrhea I guess. I'm thinking he's eating too much....too much kibble and he's sneaking food from his brother....I guarantee it...I know the Innova EVO is a really good food -- so we'll just deal with the stinky gas and breath....we still love him and he still attacks my hubby with kisses nightly....so no use changing something that's so good for him, right? I've just gotta find a way to cut down on his food. |
My puppy food came out with a "B". Then when I went to the dog food analysis site it was a 2 star. I am bummed. As soon as Gracie is done nursing I am switching back to Merrick for them all. Gracie doesn't like the Merrick Puppy Plate so when she got closer to her due date I switched to the Nutro small bites puppy that we knew she would eat. I am defiantly switching back to Merrick. Her Merrick food came out with an A+ and 5 stars. |
The grade chart & dog food analysis is just a guide. Just bc it doesn't get a good grade or high stars doesn't mean it's not a good food. What's important is reading the ingredients (1st 5 ingredients are what makes the bulk of the food) & knowing what works for your pet (high/low protein or no/yes grains). For example: I feed mine Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison. It's grain free, limited ingredients for allergy sufferers. I chose this food bc Momo has a sensitive GI tract & doesn't do well on a high protein diet. Food grading chart gave it an A+ while dog food analysis gave it 4 stars. |
Very interesting post. I give Roxie Nutro Natural Choice Oatmeal, but had read around various forums that it wasn't a good choice. I had contemplated switching her to Blue Buffalo since I had heard such good things about it. Now I am a bit confused. This lists gives the Nutro an A+ rating. Should I keep her on it, or still think about switching? |
Our food is not on the list I'm currently feeding my girls Holistic Health Extension(small bites) which has organic chicken in it but I don't see it on the list...not sure if it's a fairly new food or not. They really love it though. |
switching to blue wilderness Hi, I've been giving my dogs Life's Abundance for 5 years now. It has an A+ rating also, but now all the talk is "grainless" They say grain isn't part of a dog's natural diet, but I don't think potatoes are either. I'm trying some higher protein food for mine. Evo was too high in fat, my yorkie has pancreatitis. The orijen was good, now I'm trying Blue wilderness which seems to be right in the middle as far as protein goes, and it's fairly low in fat. Anyone else feeding their dog wilderness blue? |
For anyone who uses Excel, I stuck this rating system into a worksheet, using the most recently updated grading system I could find by the original author, with a few extra internet notes, and if you're familiar with Excel it makes the math pretty quick. It's not pretty but it's functional. Of course once you get an idea what to look for in kibbles you wouldn't need it. I found unraveling the mysteries of kibble pretty tedious until I ordered it on the excel sheet, that gave me a better idea of what was what. Thought I'd mention it anyway in case anyone wants to use it, except I don't think it can be attached here very easily? |
Thanks for the very informative thread! I am now in the process of switching my kids over to Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown Rice Small Breed and so far so good. They seem to really like it:). |
so, is Royal Canin Mini Yorkshire 28 a good premium dog food? Any yorkie family is currently feeding their Yorkie with this brand? I just bought it and seem like Chloe loves it! |
My poor puppy has had such a hard start in life. I plan to feed her Artemis dry to just leave out, but am going to feed her a raw diet otherwise. She just LOVES raw beef. I have given her grasfed organic raw ground beef which I mixed with a bit of dry, some chopped carrots and some superfood powder. This was just to tide me over until I get to the pet store next week where I can buy the Primal raw beef for her. It has all the vitamins and nutrients in it that she will need. A complete dog food. I really hope she likes it since she loves beef over all meats. Then I can finally stop searching and trying. Almost all holistic vets recommend raw diet for dogs. I have researched it and totally agree! They seem to be much healthier dogs. |
I feed the Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice...I'm happy it was up on your list, and that it was a 98! Definitely happy about that..now I can be quite confident that I'm feeding my boys quality food!! Thanks for that! |
This is a really good resource :) I'm so glad to see that you have posted this here. My roommate has a westie and he's had serious skin issues throughout the years. He put him on Natural Balance L.I.T. Sweet Potato & Venison a little over two weeks ago per his new vet. It has made a WORLD of difference. He is a complete different little boy! And since then I've gotten my little Lucy and put her on Natural Balance L.I.T. Duck & Potato for puppies because I wanted to skip the possible allergies and go straight to a grain free choice. I'm still confused on whether or not she needs any grains. I've heard/read so many contradicting things. Thank you for this info! KK |
Since there is not 1 perfect food... I say buy those with little or no grains and definitely not at the top of the list if they have any. And no way any with corn! Dr. Becker says we should all be rotating food every 3 months for the reason being that there isn't 1 perfect food. Then you can buy some with no carbs and some with a little. The traditional vets all sell junk dog food in my opinion. Good luck and just do your best. ;) Quote:

Thank you :) Yea, the pet store was SHOCKED the vet recommended Natural Balance. They said almost all vets recommend Science Diet or Nutro. I really like the Natural Balance. I figure I'll switch her up with the various non grain formulas they offer for her. I also can't wait to make her a soup or stew!!! |
offf topic?? have a question dont know who to ask but why wondering my 5mnth yr old morkie seems like she has baldy spots or lossing hair type of thing?i shower her every 6 to 7 days>??am i doing something wrong? she uses hyphoallergenic shampoo...idk what to do? any ideas??? |
Oh no!! You better go get a skin scraping and have them scrape in several areas. She may have mange like mine has. Sarcoptic mange mine was sold to me with! It stinks!!! Even if they don't find a mite, you better re-test a week or two later to be sure. I hear it is hard to find an actual mite. My vet found one from one little scraping which meant my 14 week or so old Yorkie at the time must have been covered with them!!! I hope yours doesn't have it, but you better get a scraping. Where did you get your puppy? Quote:

My Yorkie eats Primal Raw Beef, Artemis small breed puppy and Innova/Evo beef. Only the best for my little baby!! Quote:

I can tell you Natural balance is very good quality food. I worked next door to Natural Balance and I know what quality ingredients go into NB food. They use the best meats, fruit and veggies. Trust me if you could only see the steaks that go into that food! Trust me its even good for humans. 2 bad I moved to Texas and petsmart here does not carry Natural Balance but I know Petco has it but then I dont have a Petco here. OMG! This sounds like a commercial LOL! |
Yea, I have to go to Petco or the holistic pet store to get it. I love it for her!! xxoo KK |

Do to allergy problems, I am going bonkers!!! with trying so many different foods and I really can't afford this. When I got him he was on a terrible dry food with the main ingredient wheat. He was a year old Nov. and I still can't get rid of tearing eyes. I am now watching him closely on the foods I give. Right now I have Mr.T on raw rabbit with rabbit kibble to munch on during the day if he wants it but doesn't eat much of it. I have been told so many different things, I am upside down. Now I've found there is a difference in the meat being a cold, warm, or neutral food. I am trying each kind and stick to one list of all the foods in that list, even what the treats contain. If the tearing starts, I switch to a different list. My vet says it could be airborne but with the winter, he stays in. I clean, clean, and clean. I should probably research this on a different site. I wanted to read up on this thread, but my main problem is tearing eyes and have been told it is probably from his food. I did try some angel eyes when I was visiting my sis and it stopped. My concern with that is there is an antibiotic in it and I don't know the long term effects. Hers is a Maltese with the red stains. If no one here can help, I will keep researching. One of these days, my baby is going to be tear free. It can get really bad. BUT, he doesn't wake up with it. It starts after he eats. |
Could it be something you are cleaning with? |
Being indoors can be very drying for their eyes & sinuses. It can be environmental allergies, but it can also be genetics. If his parents had tear staining problems, then he'll most likely have it too. How much protein is in his food? I've noticed that high amounts of protein also produces more eye gunk. |
Does anyone else feed RC's Yorkshire Terrier 28? I'm switching to Artemis Small Breed when I run out, but I've used RC for years and my little nugget is seemingly healthy |

I couldn't find it in dog food analysis either, but by the ingredients, it sounds like a good premium food. |
Does any one feed their puppy NOW! dog food? |
HELP! I have created a monster! My Tucker came from a home that couldn't keep him. I got him at 6 mths. He was very thin and unsocialized but still had a great personality. He would not eat when I got him home, I have 2 other big dogs and feed Origen which they do amazing on. After making home made chicken cubes, putting cheese on his food (just a little), I landed on a raw diet, which he seemed to love. Now he sticks his nose up in the air at raw, so I am trying Origen Puppy and Tripe (for extra temptation). No matter what I put in front of him he really only gets excited about his late evening feed. I worry that he should eat more than once per day (he is 4-4 1/2 lbs). :confused:When he won't eat, I give him a little , 1/2", Nutrical to keep his blood sugers up. Can a Yorkie thrive on 1 feeding a day?PS - He is 10 months now. I am probably doing this posting wrong and I apologize, I am a Newbie and very worried. |
Hi there, you might get more answers if you start a thread in this forum: Yorkie Health & Diet - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community Click on the 'New Thread' button on the left hand top. Some smaller Yorkies really don't eat much, but I personally don't have too much experience on one that only eats well at one meal. Mine are hungry all the time, but we recently switched to Acana Grasslands & they love it! I did have to entice Mimi to eat when she was younger. I tried all kinds of things: scrambles eggs, hard boiled eggs, boiled chicken breast, salmon, pumpkin, baked sweet potato. She'll eat it for a couple of days & she would turn her nose on it, then I had to think of something else to mix into her food. Now, she eats the Acana very well, w/nothing on it, but I do mix in some diced thawed frozen green beans for breakfast & Coco Therapy oil for dinner. |
