Is teeth brushing necessary? Kilo chews on rawhide, sticks and coconut husks (we live in the jungle and they are everywhere) daily. Does he really need his teeth brushed? |
From what I've learned and read, yes. Yorkies are extremely prone to tooth decay and tarter so it's very important to keep up with their teeth. I am not practicing what I preach yet. Yes! Our 7 year old just had her incisors removed. Also we took her off rawhide for a bite, she wasn't tolerating it (I think this contributed as well). Bristler reccommended Pezlife and I've heard that Dental Fresh which is added to the water once a day is good too. We use a finger brush. Francie hates it but we do our best in the evening. Have a glass of wine (or in your case a Marg! at ready). Good luck! |
Absolutely my Pixie had to have 5 teeth pulled at 2 1/2 due to bad teeth. |
Our vet said they have to have it. He called Yorkies "tartar formers". He said we only had to brush the outside of his top teeth. The inside of the top get cleaned as they clean the outside of the bottom when he chews/eats. And the inside of the bottom get cleaned by his tongue. We use the finger brush too. He hates it but he endures it. Then punishes us by pouting at us after. |
I say it depends(I will probably be the only one that disagrees). My sister in law has an 8 year old yorkie(who has cancer) and a 6 year old yorkie. The 8 year old one has had her teeth cleaned every year(by the vet) for a long time, and they're still terrible. The 6 year old gets checked every year, and has yet to have to have hers brushed. I think it depends on the yorkie. I don't brush my dogs teeth, never have. The only one of my inside dogs who has bad teeth is my 11 year old shih tzu. The 6 year old yorkies teeth are fine, as are my other dogs teeth. They always have chew bones to chew on, and I think that's what's always helped(well, I didn't start giving them chew bones until maybe 5 years ago), now I always have their toy box filled with them(the mint chews from drsfostersmith). Normally I would say yes, but with all the hard things that he's chewing he may be keeping the tartar at bay. Dogs aren't prone to cavities, but they are prone to tartar, and tartar can lead to gum inflammation and early tooth loss. We use Petzlife, and it is said to soften tartar and then you brush it away at a later time, but I feel like when Joey's chewing on his bully sticks he's scraping his teeth better than I'm doing while I brushing his teeth. Joey's breeder said you should try for brushing about 3 times a week using toothpaste safe for dogs. Has your dog had a dental checkup, your vet could tell you more. I also think it depends on the diet, homemade and canned foods sticks to teeth more than hard kibble, and studies show that hard kibble slows the growth of tartar over canned, but brushing is probably the best preventative. |
