I've tried everything, he still smells! Help! :confused:Hi all, It has been a while since I have been on here and I have missed Yorkie Talk. So I need your help! Charlie stinks!! I mean he has an odor to him that I can not figure out. I have taken him to the vet several times and they can't find anything that would cause an odor. He is healthy, no ear infection, no yeast, anal glands are fine, eyes are clear, no allergies, breath is fine, I use hight quality groomer shampoo, but something is foul. So I have him groomed and bathe him myself and seriously the next day he reeks. The only thing I can think of is maybe it is his food, he has been on a fish diet for quite some time now due to allergies, now that I think about it I don't remember him smelling prior to the fish switch. He is currently on Orijen Fresh Fish 6, I am wondering if the fish odor is coming through his skin or something, although it seems more like his facial area that smells. Any suggestions? Does anyone have their yorkie on an all fish diet? Do they smell more than before or not at all? |
Abbi's face smells like that every day. It seems to be the tears that soak into her hair on her face that smells. My other three dogs wash each other's faces and ears every day, but Miss Abbi just bites them if they try it to her. So - I have to use puppy shampoo and wash her face every day. It's kind of a pain, but really doesn't take too long. Michele :-) |
Two thoughts come to mind..since the odor seems to be his face...is he teething? Or have you eliminated an infected tooth? |
He is almost 2 yrs. old. Would he still be teething at this age? |
When my dogs ate fish, they didn't really smell different. What does this smell like? Is his fur oily? Are there skin issues? Are his eyes draining? When you say "no yeast" - was a fungal culture done? Like Deb said, check the mouth. |
I know this is going to sound weird, but the vet didn't think he smelled bad. The smell is potent. When I come home from work around 1:30 p.m. I go straight to him to take him out to potty, the first thing I notice is his stench. The thing that gets me is he didn't come home smelling this way, this odor developed later down the line, but it has been here for awhile now. He use to smell great for the first 8-10 months that we had him. He has a very soft cotton coat, his skin looks great. His eyes don't run much, actually that is not a big issue anymore since we took care of the allergies. Vet said teeth are fine, he has one that may need to be pulled later on but nothing to worry about. |
I would look at the food you're feeding. Maybe it's like people who smell. What you eat comes through your skin and can make quite a stank!:p Have you tried the Preference raw food? Maybe your pup can't tolerate the other stuff. I hear Ellens new food is great too. Try Halo and see how he likes it. I'm pretty confident that the more natural (really natural) the food is, the better! |
He has been on raw before and he still smelled then, the raw didn't help the allergies either. I have tried them all as far as food goes, he eats Orijen very well but again it is fishy. I am afraid to take him off the fish because I would hate for the allergies to return. |

He was there two months ago. The vet was not anxious about pulling the tooth. She made it seem like it was no big deal at all, she said it may need to be pulled later down the line, but now I am thinking I should take him back. |

Mollys face can smell quite bad when she is coming up to bath night. I thought her teeth were bad to start with, but discoverd it was the fur at the side of her mouth. It sometimes goes in her mouth, so it was the smell of stale food. Now i wash her face more often and the problem has gone away. |
This happened with Ellie too and it happened to be her eyes. Of course no odor when it was time to see the vet. It happened after a course of metronidazole quite badly. Her eyes were clear but just slightly watery. That is definitely where the smell was coming from. It went away soon enough though. My first guess would be his teeth or breath possibly caused by something going on internally. |
Isla had quite a few retained puppy teeth (7-8) that she removed when she was spayed. They weren't rotting, they didn't look bad, but they STUNK! It was crazy, but my 5 month old puppy had the worst breath from those teeth! I think they trap bacteria in between the puppy teeth and the adult teeth which starts to grow and smell. After she had them removed, it got significantly better--and she has NO issues now that she's eating raw. I'd maybe pull that tooth if it's really close to another... |
Update: So I have really been checking Charlie's funky smell out. I just gave him a bath last Friday, and his body still smells great today. So I know for sure it is the facial area. Today I cleaned his eyes and smelled them, opened his mouth and smelled it, cleaned his muzzle and smelled it, all those areas are fine and don't have an odor. I think this guy may have an issue with his ears, it is the only area that seem to still have a stench, the left side more than the right. I just cleaned his ears on Friday too, they seemed really clean. Charlie hates getting his ears cleaned but he did let me clean them, I would think since he has been stinky for so long the inside of his ears would be black by now if it were an infection. So I will take him to the vet and see what she has to say. |
