New Puppy and Heartworm med? Hi everyone Just got my puppy today. I am so very exited and he is very cute.:D. I will be taking him to the vet for a general check up tomorrow. And I will be asking for a heartworm preventative med. I live in Fl so mosquitos all year here. I have read somewhere don't remeber where that usually heartworm med is not given until 6 months because is not effective before then and that the puppy needs to be 2lbs or more. My puppy is 1lbs 5 oz now. I want to start potty training to go outside as well now. What should I do with the heartworm since I live in FL and all year round mosquitos and my puppy is not 2 lbs. Also which one is better heartguard or Sentinel? Thanks |
I like Interceptor (Sentinel without the chitin inhibitor for fleas) for Yorkies. Sentinel is also fine if you want the added Program. heartgard is okay too. You can use Interceptor when they are 2 pounds and he should be by 6 months. You are seeing the 6 month thing because it takes that long for the larva to go to the heart and turn into adults. So basically a pup less than 6 months old shouldn't have a problem with heartworms at all. I would be on the safe side and start probably around 4-5 months if possible. |
I've used Interceptor for years but you do need to wait til they are 2 lbs |
