coconut oil?? I saw a posting about using coconut oil for itching/dry skin . Well I tried some on Lexi and her fur looks greasy! It doesn't get on anything else..it just looks bad. I don't even know if it helped. Anyone else using it? Is this the product that comes in a jar, white, and looks like shortening? |
I use coconut oil and yes it looks just as you've described. Primarily I'm giving it to my yorkies in their food, for the many health benefits. But, I've used it on Reno's coat before, to see if it would work as a good conditioner. I used a very small amount, rubbed it between my hands before working it over his entire coat. Although it did make him a little greasy looking, it was no worse than other oils, conditioners, etc. that I've left in his hair. Also, it washed right out a couple of days later with his next bath. |
what does coconut oil do for your dogs? |
I thought Coconut Oil was to add to their food not put on their coat. Ben has silky hair and I can't put too much of anything on it to leave in. Any conditioner or moisturizer has to be the rinse out type or he will look greasy too. I found Espree Luxury Remoisturizer to be an excellent hair and skin conditioner for mine. I have a problem with him getting a little dry skin (almost looks like dandruff) when I shampoo too often. Once I started using the Espree Luxury Remoisturizer and Espree shampoos, that was solved. |

I use it for my dogs. They will lick it right out of my hand. I keep my jar sitting by the grooming table and I do use it on coats also. Usually just on the show coats tho. Mine looks exactly like what you described. i got it at Walmart. |
I just ordered the Garden of Life coconut oil. It was so funny because they run if they think you are going to put anything on them. When they got a smell and taste of it they went crazy. I thought they were going to knock me down to get to it. I haven't used it in their food yet but put just alittle on them to keep them from being bit from mosquitos and haven't seen any fleas yet but I hope it repels them too. |
Sissy and Angel each get about 1/2 tsp of coconut oil (Garden of Life, Extra Virgin Organic) in their food each night. It has so many wonderful health benefits!!!!!!!! BTW - if you're going to begin using it for yourself or the furkids, make sure you only get a quality extra virgin organic and it must be cold pressed as well. It is the best oil to use for cooking (much healthier even than olive oil) and can also be substituted for any recipe using lard/crisco or even liquid vegetable oil. |
So i went to Whole Foods today and got the Garden of Life Coconut oil. She's 4.5lbs so would i just give her 1/2 a tsp? also for those that take this themselves, how much do you take? |

Start at about 1/4 tsp and work up. It liquifies really easily with a little heat, so even if you put it in a bowl and cup your hand around it to generate some heat, it will melt, then mix in with her food or just let her lap it up!!!! |
there is nothing going on her skin, no spots, rashes or fleas... I don't know if it is allergies, behavior issues, baby stuff. she also bits her paws. Today I am giving her a bath with tea tree shampoo and conditioner. |

What are you feeding? How long has she been chewing her paws? Are her eyes watery? |
SHe has had this for several months..In Florida and MA. Her eyes do get gooey...as I have to wipe them daily. I give her Blue Buffalo, puppy, and now most recently small breed. If I distract her, she doesn't scratch or chew.. I have allergies myself and have similar symptoms..how odd! The vet recommended benedryl. I hate to give it to her, but if its really bad I will. |
