He will not eat his food. Hello I am a new Yorkie owner as of yesterday and boy has he stole my heart. Peanut is 8 months old and spoiled rotten. The owners told me he was spoiled and they gave him table food to eat. I would like to stop this but not sure how. I figured that when he got hungry he would eat his own food but he still has not. I'm at a loss. What do I do?? |
How much does he weigh? If he is small, it is important to get some food in him. Try rice and boiled chicken. Mine also likes green beens. What food are you trying? I know that someone will have some good ideas. If you have a good kibble, you may try mixing it with the rice or chicken. It may take time to get him settled before he is a good eater. Also, Yorkies are very picky eaters. |
I have thought about him being in a new enviroment and thought that could be it. He weights 5lbs. He eats Purina Beneful. I will try the rice and chicken and see how he does. |
My vet tech said that Beneful could be problematic as it could cause allergies. It has so many ingredients that it would be hard to tell what is causing an allergy. Yorkies do have allergies on occasion. Do a search on this site, and you will find many ideas for good kibble. Mine is on Royal Canin, but I know that some people have other ideas too. Good luck with your new baby. |
Ok great I will. Thank you so much for the info. I will do some research and speak with my vet when I take him in this week for a check up. |
I'm having the same problem. I just got my little boy today and he has not even touched his food! Any ideas? |
My vet told me to use Gerber chicken and gravy (2nd foods) jar. First give the baby food alone on a spoon, then mix with kibble. I did that when mine didn't eat. She is still fussy. I give her Blue Buffalo, small size now. Sometimes she only eats once a day. She will always eat little treats when offered them! Never turns them down. |
I just went through this with my little baby that we adoped on Friday. We feed her at set times and she likes her kibble dry. You might want to try another food, we use Evo small bites. This is a great grain free holistic kibble. My 5 year old yorkie is very finicky so now I make his food and add vitamins to supplement (boiled rice and cooked ground beef) |
When your trying to get them to eat a new food, you have to eliminate all human food and treats, otherwise they learn to hold out for the tastier fare. You can gradually introduce them back, only after they are eating their dog food regularly. Joey was extremely fussy, and I was so happy when people recommended Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers. I later learned that there may be healthier choices, but this is probably a medium type of health choice, and he will eat it, which is a big plus. I tried a higher rated food several months ago, now that he's not so fussy, but Joey started getting a massive amount to drainage from his eyes, so we switch back to Royal Canin. I've read many good things about Wellness, and might try that next, but I've read that some won't eat it. Don't forget, the Pet Stores will allow you to bring back foods that your dog doesn't like, as long as you keep the receipt, and many people have had luck sprinkling parmesan cheese on the kibble, to tempt them to eat it. First stop with the other food, and treats, otherwise nothing will work. |
