Any other remedies for allergies? My poor girl was up all night scratching at her face and chewing on her paws. I KNOW I should give her benedryl but I just hate giving her meds- any one else do anything else to give them relief? If it gets worse I'll have to cave- but right now i'm able to keep her distracted from itching! |
That type of itching is usually considered related to a food allergy. Have you eliminated that possiblity? |

We have been trying a small amount of local honey. I can't tell if its helping yet since we've had rain the past 5 days but its not hurting him any. |
I had to break down and put Cali on Atopica, it is the only thing that relieves her constant scratching short of steroids. I tried everything else. |
Gosh Marci, if she's that bad I sure would consider Atopica. I know you don't want to do the meds but it is dang sure safer than steroids and I know the results are fantastic. I would hate for her to be so miserable :( Maybe you can look into the plant sterols and start them next year a couple months before spring starts blooming. I know a few on here started with them a month of so ago.. Poor Layla!! Give her hugs and kisses from me and my boys, please! |
Have you tried any spray on products or shampoo's to stop the itching? At the grooming shop where i go to school we use Eqyss microtek shampoo and it has been shown to help clear up skin problems and stop the itches. maybe it would work on Layla here is the main website Welcome to EQyss Grooming Products the spray Micro-Tek Spray the shampoo Micro-Tek Shampoo Once a dog starts licking and itching one spot they inflame the skin and just make it worse so they scratch more and more. soothing the skin may help sooth the allergies. |
Do you use any salmon oil on his food or something, that will help any of the omega fatty acids, apple cider vinegar mixed with water is supposed to help, sometimes I will just rinse chester off in the tub |
Chamomile Tea Try a Chamomile tea rinse. Steep 4 or 5 tea bags in a cup of water, let cool and pour into a clean gallon milk jug and fill the rest of the way with warm water. Bathe the dog and rinse well then pour the tea over the dog let it get into eyes it will sooth them. Do not rinse the tea off, dry as usual. It's not failed me yet. And its non-toxic. They can drink it for tummy aches and gas. :) |
Thanks everyone- some really good suggestions- she seems better today than yesterday, however I do know our bad days are not over with. To the poster who asked about Salmon Oil- Layla can't have it :( |
You could try a shampoo that contains antihistamines like Histacalm. It doesn't seem to me that natural remedies for environmental allergies work that great and if it is that serious, I would also recommend talking with your vet about Atopica. It is definitely a quality of life issue now. :( |

Marcel has environmental allergies - he doesn't really itch, but his eyes get gunky and he is at his paws - even at 1am/3am in the morning. When it intereferes this much, I agree w/ Crystal in that it is now a QOL issue. I took both boys to a Vet Derm. last weekend - and I started Marcel on Atopica today. [btw, benadryl didn't touch him] |

I also worry that the more frequent baths will add to her dry skin issues (Boy this girl came with a lot of issues :p ) good think she is cute! Do you know how often you use the shampoo? |
