*Question for Parents of Babies with LP*

My Bella was just diagnosed with LP and she is doing very well. :) I plan to keep her on a long term glucosamine supplement and many YTs recommended Cosaquin. I was just wondering what type of Cosaquin do you give your babies to help control their LP? And how do you administer it (i.e. do you have to use pill pockets or do you mix it with food?).

1. Chewable Bonelets
2. Sprinkle Caspsules for small dogs
3. Double Strength chewable tablets
4. Other? If, so what kind do you use?

Any other tips you have would be GREAT! :)

I give Zander & Chelsea the double strength chewable tablets (bone shaped). Their dosage is actually half of one of these so I just snap a tablet in half & give one half to each of them. They love them and think they're getting a 'treat'. I chose to use the DS because it's more economical for me this way.

My vet recommended Cosamin DS for Squirt's arthritis. He also has LP in his rear legs. It's had remarkably good results for the arthritis, but I can't tell what it's done, if anything, for his LP. Cosamin DS comes in a capsule. I open the capsule, & sprinkle some powder on his food once per day. One capsule lasts 3 or 4 days.

It good to know that they will take these as a treat. Bella is a picky little diva :rolleyes: and its so hard to get her to take a pill.

What grade LP's does Bella have? Although Cosequin can help with the arthritis luxating patellas cause, it will not correct them. Grade 3 or 4 will need surgery.

Cosequin DS (double strength) is for dogs 25 pounds and over. Toy breed dogs need the regular strength. The loading dose is a full capsule every day for six weeks. After that you can cut it back to 1/2 capsule if you like. Lady still gets a full capsule sprinkled on her breakfast every morning.

Thank you for your help :) Bella has grade 1 LP in her right leg and grade 2 LP in her left. From what I understand, weight control and supplements can be very effective in avoiding surgery for grades 1 and 2.

You are absolutely right. And remember, the most important thing is no jumping on and off furniture!

I give Libby Flexicose glucosamine complex. I like it because it is liquid and I can just squirt it on her food, rather than try to get a pill down her. I take it also.

milu has LP as well, i am not sure what grade. (a traveling vet diagnosed it) but my regular vet is back and i will see him next week to ask him what grade of LP.

you said it's bad for them to jump on and off the furniture. how about stairs? we have lots of stairs in our house. i would like to know if stairs is also bad for her?

she loves going up and down the stairs all the time so i would like to know if that is a bad idea for me to let her do that?

she is 13 months old and weighs 3 lbs. so the steps are pretty much her height, it's like she is doing pull ups when she goes up the stairs.

i am ordering the regular strength one for milu. i will also ask my vet about it when i see him next week. not sure if he knows about supplements though. but if i hear any useful information, i will be sure to share that with you. :)

This is definitely going to be the hard part. :rolleyes: I've been putting stairs everywhere, but Bella has been super stuborn about using them. Any tips?
