looking for advice... 2 Attachment(s) I know he is not a yorkie, but, i would love any input on what i should do...I took Benjamin in for his 4th round of DHPP on Monday...within an hour of it his face and eyes swelled up...i called the emergency vet (since his vet had closed) and they had me give him some benedryl and wait an hour...it did begin to go down. However, now i am very concerned about the rabies shot they want to give him on the 18th of this month. They want me to bring him in in the am, and they want to have an iv in, and give him shots beforehand (something for allergic reaction). I know he needs to have the rabies shot, but, am i doing the right thing by taking him now for it? He just turned 16 weeks yesterday. He is due to be neutered on the first of June. This is a picture of his eye before it got really swollenAttachment 274936 and this is a picture of how he laid in my lap for over and hour after giving him the benedryl...i put a cool washcloth across his eyes because they were so swollen and red....Attachment 274937 I feel really nervous about this.... |
Ask your vet if a steroid pill for your little one to take a couple of hours before his shot would be appropriate for him. This does essentially what your Benedryl does execpt on a larger systemic scale. Best of luck |
I would just be crazy. You will get a lot of information soon on YT. |
I had a litter of puppies that all had the same allergic reaction. Do you know if the shot had LEPTO in it? All of my puppies were allergic to that. I would definitely get the rabies shot, but do it by itself and if you have another round of shots wait a few days for them. We didn't have any problems with the rabies shot, so hopefully you won't either. Poor little baby! Good luck and keep us posted! |

I told them no LEPTO! So to my knowledge it was not given!~ Thanks for the good wishes... |
Oh wow...poor baby. A long time breeder friend always gives their dogs benedryl as a preventative before any injection. Sounds like the vet is definitely doing preventative measures. Something else to consider...whatever caused the reaction in his DHPP vaccine isn't in the rabies. Allergic reactions generally happen quickly as you found out...you could just wait afterward. I understand...I'd be nervous too. I get nervous and none of mine have ever had a reaction. |
Gizmo is also allergic to the DHPP and swells up at first the docs would give the pre steroid inj. and a dose of benadryl for her size. after several yrs that stopped working. She now gets titered every 3 yrs to make sure she has enough of the DHPP in her to protect her. Benjamin may or may not be as severe as Gizmo is. Gizmo is allergic to everything including the yeast her own skin produces. Most of the time depending on severity the pre inj works just fine. After the rabies is given it would be adviseable to stay at the vets office for about 20 - 30 min after the rabies inj so if there is any reaction you will be there for immediate medical attention. |
Tricksie never gets the Lepto because I don't board her. |
Premedicating with Benadryl and possibly steroids is fine. I have no idea why your pup would have to stay all day with an IV. Ellie reacted a couple years ago too and we just do Benadryl first now. |

i guess they just want to be sure nothing happens. being extra extra extra careful LOL Just make sure they give him a shot of benedryl 15 minutes before getting the rabies vaccine. He may not have a reaction to the rabies because its different from the distemper vax. what interesting is that he had the other boosters with no problem right? i wonder what happened this time? |
Oh poor lil' Benjamin. Please keep us posted! |

It is acquired from the urine of an infected animal. That animal may be a wild animal that just happens into your yard, or it may be domesticated like your neighbors cat. Your pets can become infected from the dew on grass that has been urinated on. If your dogs are out in your yard, they are susceptible. |

Are you absolutely sure that the last set did not contain lepto or corona? |

They didnt premedicate before the last shot....they told me to give him benadryl at home...i gave him 1 1/2 ml of childrens liquid I just called the vets and they said absolutely no lepto or corona given.. They said they will give him steroid and benadryl before the rabies and the reason for the iv is just in case the worst reaction would happen...they would be able to give whatever was needed. She said if he went into the worst reaction it would be harder to find a vein..? as far as the distemper parvo...we will do titer tests |

Placing an IV is fine and premedicating is fine but not sure why he needs to stay all day. We stay for 1/2 hour after will Ellie. An hour would be being extra safe. They can react a few hours after but then they can react a day or two after too (generally way less severe), so I suppose whatever your vet is comfortable with. There are some really nice vets out there who let the owner stay in the lobby and hold the dog instead of leaving them.;) |

My yorkie also had a reaction on his 3rd booster. When we got home his muzzle swelled and he kept itching his ears. I rushed him back to the vet and they gave him steriod and benedrayl shot. I had to give him bendrayl for a couple more days before he was hisself again. What a scare. |
