Uncontrollable Peeing Hi all, my mother-in-law has a potential brother for our yorkie Gigi. The only problem is that he pees alot. He doesn't squat or lift his leg at all. He just runs around & pees without even knowing hes doing it. Since this happens often, he drinks alot of water. Someone suggested to us to get him fixed & that will resolve it. I was wondering if I could find any other advice about this problem. I don't think its a potty training issue, since he poops only outside. I've seen my friends yorkie (male) pee when he gets excited but this is way more severe than that. Any suggestions/comments are apporeciated. |
Has this dog been checked by a vet? A dog who drinks a lot of water and pees uncontrollably should be checked for diabetes. Are you sure he's not lifting his leg and marking? Males that have not been neutered will do that. The older he is, the less chance neutering will stop marking. |

After that, the vet would want to check the integrity of structures in the urinary system. |
Has the vet ruled out a UTI, stones, diabetes and diabetes insipidus? |
It sounds like there could be more to this than behavior, I'd take him to the vet he may not even feel that he needs to go so it just happens. |
Thanks all, I'll tell her to take em to the vet armed with all these things to check for? I'll post back with any results. |
Definitely sounds like diabetes insipidus. Loki has that. He takes 2 medications he still has to go outside more than usual and he wakes up really thirsty, but he's fine :) It's so rare that many vets have never even heard of it. They don't make a canine drug for it. I get his medicine at the regular pharmacy. It's expensive, but it works! |
I definitely agreee with the others, Diabetes, stones, UTI; it literally could be a myriad of things, all not good. Get him in for a check up asap. Best of luck |
