Orijen puppy food?
 
Hi

I need to purchase food for the new pup. There have been a few discussion on Orijen but I would like the pros and cons of the puppy version for a Yorkie pup.

We dont have the same range here in the UK that you do, and Orijen seems to be the only premium food you have that we import.

I was just wondering if this will be suitable for a 9 week old pup. Is the kibble too big? Will the protein leave him hyperactive or growing very quickly? Is it best to wait until most of their growth is done, and then just put him on the adult orijen? (at say 9 months).

The other food I am considering is Burns mini bites. It is a high quality food in the UK, but has grain.

I had Millie on Arden Grange, and while she seemed to be fine on it, she didnt really like it. She really picked at it.

The breeder has him on Royal Canin puppy, and scrambled eggs, weetabix, but I want to wean him off it.

i would definitly change him from what he is on- what an odd diet for a breeder to put a puppy on....

I think Orijen (puppy and adult) is a GREAT food and I'd feed it no problem. You should wait until he is 12 months until he is changed to adult food.

high protein will not make him hyper at all... or grow too fast- as long as he is on a puppy formula he will do great!

Just as the previous poster mentioned, just make sure it is Orijen Puppy and you should be fine. I think Orijen is a FANTASTIC food!!

Are you going to wean him straight off that diet (gradually, I guess)?

Just got my puppy this week and the breeder was adamant that Yorkies need a high fat diet, mine is on cooked food, scrambled eggs (she won't eat them) and she wants me to keep offering the puppy formula until 6 months.

It's hard when she is so adamant and has 15 dogs, with lots of champions and they are all really healthy and well. Her dogs are all older, living to be about 15 years old.
