Wet Food Vs. Dry Food Well.....i have a small problem. Before i became a member of YT I was feeding my pups Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food. I also had just strarted mixing their dry food with the Nutra Ultra wet food. Dont ask me why....i have no idea...just thought they would like to try it. Well since i found out about that brand poss. being bad for them I switched to Wellnes (again a mix of the wet/dry food cause they werent eating the dry Nutro Ultra anymore as much as the wet Nutro so i bought both of the Wellness) and well...now they dont seem to be eating the dry food at all. Can someone please help figure out how to get them to eat dry food again or is it ok for them to always have the wet? Im not sure what the Pros and Cons are but i think id rather stick to dry food but they arent eating it anymore. Before I intorduced the wet food they did fine on the dry sooooo....did i screw up? |
I feed innova dry, and nothing else...Well, except a few spinach leaves and blueberries...I think the dry is better for their teeth...Sometimes Apple will go all day w/o eating her dry food, but she always comes around, even if it's 9 or 10 at night...If she doesn't seem to be eating, I give her a few organic spinach leaves, or blueberries, and that seems to "spark" her appetite, and she'll eat some of the dry...Try just giving dry, and see how it goes... Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork p.s...btw, she gets 3 spinach leaves and 5 blueberries everyday... |
I prefer to give dry, just because it's better for their teeth, it helps out their jaw (when they chew). It also generally has less fat. Plus, I think that in the long run... dry food is cheaper. Wet food is messier, too! ;) However, I do MIX in the wet food with the dry for his breakfasts every other morning. Sort of as a "treat." It's something he looks forward to. All the dogs I've known in my lifetime who have the horrible teeth are usually the dogs who solely eat wet food. |
I always fed canned food once a day and dry food available at all times. That worked well for me for a long time.... but one of mine decided she would just wait for the canned food. I wasn't giving them enough canned for a whole day so she started to lose weight. So, now they get no more canned. Now that she knows the canned won't come, she has gone back to eating a little dry here and there throughout the day again and gained her weight back. Dry is best, and if they won't stay on track eating a combination, then I say go with dry. I always wanted to give them variety but I don't believe in only canned as they build up tartar too quickly. |
I feed all canned and am considering raw. I don't believe that dry is better for their teeth. The enzymes in meat are what break down the tartar on a dog. That's why they make pet toothpastes with enzymes in them. The grains that stay on their teeth and that break down into sugar don't help the teeth. I would go with a high quality canned like Wellness Core, EVO, or Evangers, or raw. JMHO. Check out this article. RealFood4Pets.com - | Pet Food | Fresh Food | Real Food |
Dry food is definitely more convenient, but if you can invest the time than there is nothing wrong with feeding just the canned food. Chase only eats Innova dry and I give him canned food as a treat once a week on bath days. If you want them to eat dry food, than you might have to curtail feeding the canned for now. Try introducing the canned version again after they get used to eating Wellness dry. |
I leave Welliness or Innovia (dry) out all the time. They get canned food at night. They know that breakfast is going to be kibble and I guess I just have little piggies because they will eat it and the wet food. I give them a snack in the afternoon and they always get a bully stick once a week that is good for their teeth. |
Ace is being difficult..... I only fed dry food today and well Arizona was hungry enough to say "ok...Im starving....I will eat it!" and chowed down twicw. Ace isnt as happy so i have only seen him eat maybe two or three bits and walks away. Should I worry about him not eating enough? He is fine otherwise....playing,pooping,peeing, sleeping. |
Cute...he is waiting until you give in and give him something other than the dry food. Stick it out, he will eat. I have noticed alot of pups enjoy their food at night..after they have exhausted all their energy and need to refuel. Try not to give many nacks through the day, he will eat eventually. It's a pain isn't it...I used to worry SO MUCH when Snick would not eat...now I know he will eventually when he is ready. |
Wet v. dry . . . the eternal dog-food debate. The primary reason we feed Buster dry food is because it's more convenient for us. There are enough good arguments on both sides of the issue that we felt comfortable giving him what works best for us. He still gobbles it up, so I don't think he knows what he's missing. The benefits of dry kibble are overplayed and sometimes misleading; you still need to brush your dog's teeth with dry food. However, I agree that in my experience, the dogs with the worst teeth I've seen are the ones that eat wet food. My parents' golden retriever had to switch to raw food after a surgery, and his teeth turned noticeably yellow. |
