How Long to Give Nutri Cal? Hello there everyone! My little Chewie is now 5.5 months old and I've been giving her Nutri Cal twice a week. How long should I be giving her this? She is a great eater so her eating enough isn't a real concern. How long did you give Nutri Cal? Thanks in advance!:aimeeyork |
it shouldn't ever be given at all unless the pup is not eating or is showing signs og hypoglycemia. I know some give it as routine but that is very dangerous. it might cause diabetes. |
Lot's of people think Nutri-Cal is some sort of a supplement, and use in incorrectly, it's mainly karo syrup, and there's no need to ever use it unless you have determined your dog is experience hypoglycemia. Since one of the symptoms of hypoglycemia is loss of appetite, Nutri-cal can stimulate the appetite for more nourishing food. There is really no reason to be giving it twice a week though. Yorkies under 4 pounds tend to have more problems with hypoglycemia, because they don't have enough body fat to store energy reserves, and even an overactive playtime can bring about hypoglycemia. An bigger dog or one that is over 6 months who is still experiencing episodes of hypoglycemia should have a thorough vet check, because it could be an indication of an underlying health problem or infection. I bred yorkies for 20 years and never used it. Even my Feather who was under 2 lbs at a year and very tiny when I bought her never needed it. I think some people on here have given the impression it is some kind of cure all. I did give honey and karo to one of my babies when they were very young and had hypoglycemic issues but only if absolutely necessary |
When I got Riley, I got nutrical and would give it at bedtime, so that hopefully he would be alright through the night. I only did this for the 1st 3 or 4 nights until I could see how well he was eating. During the day I was always with him, so I could watch for signs of hypoglycemia, which he never had. He was under 1lb when I got him. He never ate much at one time, but he was tiny so he wouldn't have been expected to. He is now 3 months old and weighs a whopping 1.6lbs. When I leave home and take him with me, I always pack him some food to eat, and I also pack the nutrical, just in case, but I haven't used it in weeks. |
