Ear Hair Removal Hello Everyone! I just got my first yorkie pup, a pretty little 8 wk girl named Cairo :) I am doing all of her grooming myself so far (I have practiced on my friends 3 yorkies) but i don't know anything about removing the inner ear hair. Is this necessary for their health, or is it only for looks? And does it hurt them? I have also read about powder to use when removing the hair. Any info is appreciated ;) |
Yoda seems fine when we pluck his inner ear hairs, when we do things that hurt him, he usually lets out a little yelp (when we accidentally step on him, etc). I think it is good to clean their ears, as the hair can make their ears dirty. |
I pluck all the hair from inside Mojo's ear canal. The powder gives you a better grip and some powders also work as a little aneastetic (sp????:D) so your little girl won;t be in pain...and of course, you don;t need to do it very often! |
i was told at the vets office that there are no nerve endings in the ears to hurt them when you pull it out. i was afraid to do it my self so i took buckeye in to the vet to have it done. they yanked out fingers full of hair and buckeye didn't flinch. then they charged me $7.00. so i do it my self now |

when i asked my dr. he kept telling me that it wasn't needn't. each time i went in for my kiroshi' appointment i would ask him to make sure because Kiroshi is always scratching at his ears and the dr. tells me it's okay. So what should i do then? His hair inside is long and how should i pluck them out? |
Believe it or not, but at one time I had a vet say that you shouldn't pluck the hair out of their ears....I can not remember why or what the reason he gave... I do not do it myself, but the groomer does all of that and it doesn't cost extra....she has showed me how, but I just can't get myself to do it...just like clipping his nails...can't do that either! But it doesn't hurt at all. She uses the powsder sometimes and either weird tweezer things or her finger nails. Mojo doesn't even seem phased by her doing this. My groomer doesn't clean his ears out though...the vet does though just about everytime I take him in for something...which is all the time, since I always have questions or concerns......The used long Q-tips (she said to use the bigger baby ones at home), but I still haven't done it....I'm such a scaredy-cat and afraid to hurt him! |
Pulling ear hair is really easy. Ear powder gives you a better grip. It doesn't hurt but some dogs don't like you messing with their ears anyway. Just be aware you just pull out the hair comming up from the ear canal not hair growing here and there in their ears. My yorkie doesn't have any and most yorkies I groom have very little as well so you may not need to. Hair in the ear canals tends to trap bacteria and causes ear infections. Mostly a problem in breeds with flopped down ears like poodles, labs and golden retrievers If your yorkies ears are up it is probably not much of a problem. |
