Spaying and Painkillers? My poor little baby just got spayed. I feel so bad for her. She is less than 3lbs and is 8 months old. She looks so sad with the cone on her head. My question is....do vets normally give pain killers for 4 days after surgery? They gave them to us to give her every 12 hours. When I brought my female cat I wasn't given anything. I dont mind if she needs them but she looks fine now 2 days post surgery and is running around. Because of her small size I hate giving her medications etc. Any thoughts? |
Aw, poor Sophie! I know the feeling... Jackson got neutered today and 4 baby teeth pulled. He's 6 months old. I feel bad for him! He's SO groggy and out of it! They didn't give him a cone though. They gave me pain medicine for him for the next 5 days, one pill a day. It's called "Novox" and is 25mg. |
if she's acting fine then you don't need to give the pain meds. Morgan was sent home with them too but i didn't give her any. no need to medicate if its not needed. |
Thanks, that is what I thought. She doesnt seem to be in pain anymore so I dont think I should medicate her. |
You don't have to give them if she doesn't need them. Some dogs hide pain though, so it can be hard to tell. They can also help reduce inflammation and make the dog sleepy to reduce movement, so in my opinion, all vets should give them for spays but if you think she's okay, then no need to keep giving them. |
I am one that does not like to medicate unless it ABSOLUTELY necessary...I had both my girls done at the same time. I did not have an "E" collar on them. I also had 2 different pain meds that the vet gave me to use for 7 days. I also was given (bought!) an antibiotic because they both had their teeth cleaned at the same time. I did give them the pain meds...I gave them the meds for 5 days. I could tell that they needed it. They would keep looking and licking their incisions. IMO...the "E" collar is uncomfortable for them. One of the girls licked so much that she started to open the incision...I took a tube sock....cut off the band and heal and the toe...to kind of make a sleeve. I put her front legs through it and pulled it down to cover the incision...this cured her licking and the incision was healed shut in a couple of days...just thought I would pass this along... |
