Worried?? Hi Everyone..... I have been here for some time now but it's only now that I have FINALLY gotten my long awaited for puppie, Lucky:aimeeyork!! I am getting a little concerned about a few things....He is 13 weeks old...I have him on Nutro for puppies(for about a week now)....he isn't eating much at all:( Then I started adding a little warm water to soften it a little....he is still picky! Maybe 20-25 little nibble balls per day(at most). To me...he should be eating more....His food is freshened three times a day! Another thing...he has white dandruff like flakes in his fur that is making him a little itchy....I am using a gentle Puppy Shampoo by Hertz Lastly.. he sleeps soooooo much..... I am worried a little....I am due for his second vet visit early next month.....They are not intense issues....but they concern me! Any advice would be great!! Lucky's mommie:):aimeeyork P.S. Great site here...better than any book I've read on Yorkies!! |
Please Google "Consumer Affairs Nutro". There are a lot of reports of dogs getting sick and dying while eating it. |
Congratulations on your new puppy!!! He may be picky in eating simply because he doesn't like the food. You might want to try another kind and see if he likes it better. I would like to mention that Nutro is known for causing serious illness and even deaths in many dogs. Please consider changing his food soon! A healthier diet may improve his skin & coat, but I would definitely mention it to the vet. Also, puppies sleep a lot. When he's awake, is he playful or is he lethargic and uninterested in anything? |
Welcome to YT!!!!!!! My babies eat Taste of the Wild. I don't think Nutro is a very good food at all. Check out the Diet and Nutrition section on here. Good luck with your new baby:)My puppies all slept alot when I first got them:) |
My puppy loves eagle brand hollistic its awesome food with small kibble and it has great nutritional value. |
Dont feed him anymore Nutro. Dogs have died eating it and FDA is investigating why dogs are getting sick and dying from eating that food |
Thank you everyone for the ideas....I went out right away and bought Nutricence Junior for small breed puppies......came home and mixed a ratio into Lucky's dish and I swear .....he ate more this evening than he did in the last few days(combined).....he also got a couple of new toys too....just like he do everytime he goes shopping!!lol Again....thank you...... |
I would definitely stop using the Hartz puppy shampoo and use another brand . |
Hi and congrats on your new puppy! glad you changed from nutro but i don't think that new food you bought is any better. Food is a tough subject here on YT. most will recommend a premium high quality food with no corn, soy, wheat, or by products. Wellness, innova, merricks, and solid gold all make great puppy foods and adult foods for later in life. Wellness and Solid Gold can be found in petco or petsmart, and innova and merricks can usually be found in the smaller pet stores. never buy food from a supermarket. With a high quality food you can usually use the food measurements on the back of the bag as a starting off point. that amount on the bag is for 1 day so split it into 2 or 3 meals. Also never use products made by Hartz. They are a horrible company and their products have been known to make pets sick as well. some good shampoos in the petstore that you can get are lambert kay, buddy wash, espree, and john paul. Puppies do sleep alot. they are kinda like cats when they are puppies. sleep 70%, play 10%, eat 10%, and poop 10% LOL good luck! |
Wow....That's weird....It was at Petsmart where I was recommended that this food was good!! The Supermarket or other stores.....well, I don't consider going there for food...They're lucky if I buy Pet wipes from there.....But I am going to get a better shampoo!! Thanks a million!! |

is this the food you bought? NUTRIENCE - Dog Food it lists its ingredients weird. Chicken meat (30.0%), brewers rice, ground maize, chicken fat, dehydrated chicken, dried egg, dried beet pulp, yeast extract, hydrolysed chicken liver, herbs (0.12%) (dried fennel, dried fenugreek, dried rosemary), DL-methionine, marigold extract, dried kelp, dried carob, dried ginger, dried turmeric, dried cayenne, rosemary extract, yucca schidigera extract. Maize is just another word for corn and personally i don't like that fat is the fourth ingredient considering the 2 of the first 3 aren't great. and what is fenugreek? LOL This is just my opinion so if you like the food and it works for you that's great. |
Agree on the advice to change foods, don't use any product by Hartz...and as far as sleeping...he's a baby and babies sleep quite a bit. |
Congratulations on your new edition and on posting on YT. Here's my 2 cents worth. First, change the food. Like everyone has said, that brand is bad news. My babies eat Taste of the Wild. I have a Westie in addition to my two Yorkies the Westie has terrible food allergies. I have tried everything to help her and finally Taste of the Wild has helped. Also, put a little olive oil over the food. The pups like it and it helps their skin. I don't think you mentioned if she was scratching with the dry skin. If so, there is medicated shampoo for that. Maybe something with oatmeal. Be sure to brush her daily, that will help the skin and new puppies have a problem with their coats getting matted. And newbies are like new born babies, they require a lot of sleep. :animal36:animal-pa:D |
I went back and read your original post, sorry I called Lucky a she. Hope he won't mind. LOL |
