percentage of yorkies w/luxating patellas? Does anyone know what the percentage of yorkies that have/develop luxating patellas is? Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork |
According to the OFA, Yorkies rank #4 in cases of luxating patellas. OFA: Patellar Luxation Statistics Remember, their statistics come from responsible breeders who have their dogs knees OFA'd prior to breeding. Unfortunately, they are a select few. With the number of backyard breeders breeding Yorkies because of their popularity, I suspect that statistic is way too conservative. :thumbdown |
I would honestly guess that at least 80% of yorkies have or will develop luxating patellas to some degree. Just because there aren't visable symptoms do not mean the patellas never luxate. |
I forgot to add that you can search the OFA database to see if your breeder had her dogs' knees cleared. One of the things that should be on your checklist when you look for a reputable breeder is to ask if the parents knees have been cleared. If they haven't been OFA'd, ask to see proof from the vet that both parents knees have been checked. It can save you a lot of money in the future. Most cases of LP diagnosed under one year old are genetic. They can be caused by traumatic injury so please don't let your Yorkie jump on and off furniture. Pet steps are a must with toy breed dogs. |
