Jackson's getting neutered tomorrow!

Jackson's getting neutered tomorrow! Ah, I'm nervous! I'm trying to act really calm and cool though because I'm sure he will be fine. And I don't want him to feel my vibes but I've been pretty good tonight. I will be very worried while he is in surgery though! Just needed to post...

Also, had a question... is there anything I should put him in to make sure he doesn't lick the stitches? I know I could ask the vet tomorrow but just wanted to see on here. I don't want him wearing one of those cones, I don't even know if they still give those anymore. What should I be prepared for?

Cindyloohoo 04-21-2009 05:18 PM

I was so nervous when Coco was fixed. They did give her a cone :0( I don't think the surgery is as complex on a male though. I'm not sure he will even have noticable stiches. I am just comparing to my male cat though. Don't worry too much. He will be fine :)

manolos mom 04-21-2009 05:20 PM

I bet you are very nervous, You are such a great and caring MOM. Everything will be fine. I just know it....

Aww poor poor guy!! He will do just fine!! Yes give him good vibes tonight b/c he will know something is up!! I was a nervous wreck when peanut was neutered too!! I just watched pnut really good so he didnt have to wear the cone!! But some dogs dont bother the sx area as much as other so its hard to say... I hear some people put onesies on females..but I dont know how they would would on a male :D maybe like 2 or 3 days after you can put some shorts or something on him that covers it a little... I will send some good vibes over to you!!

Elaine Benise 04-21-2009 05:41 PM

No worries!! He will be just fine!!! For extra caution, I'll say some prayers!!

Let us know how he does!! We'll be thinking of both of you!

yorkiemalt 04-21-2009 05:43 PM

Good Luck Jackson! I'm sure he'll do fine and be home before you know it.

kalina82 04-21-2009 05:46 PM

Good luck Jackson! he's gonna do great

i know most people don't like cones but you need to remember that is the human's issue, not the dogs. teh dog is just like "wtf is on my head" for like a hot minute then sees a toy and forgets all about it.

you can try putting little boys underwear on him tho, backwards to the tail goes through the hole thing, you know. lol

jmdt 04-21-2009 05:59 PM

Good idea with the boy underwear. My Coco didn't even bother the stitches. I was lucky. Maybe you will be lucky also. Just wait and see how he does. He will be very groggy for the rest of the day tomorrow, but by the next morning he should be his old self. Don't try to force water or food on him though. He might be a little nauseus from the anesthesia. I gave my Coco some water on a tea spoon. Just to wet his whistle. Coco, Pebbles and Trixie are sending a great big get better soon hug. I will keep ypur little boy in my prayers. I'm sure he will do fine...you not so much!! I know I was a nervous wreck. I must have called the vet 3 times. I just wanted to know when he was out of surgery and in recovery.

:ghug:We are thinking of you little Jackson.

msjagg 04-21-2009 07:00 PM

I'll have you and Jackson in my thoughts for tomorrow. He's going to do just fine!! Put a onsie on him backwards so that the snaps are on his back and his tail can stick out between the snaps.Just do it for a few days and if he doesn't try to lick @ the sutures then take it off. Hugs and Prayers for you both,:thinking::hands::hands::goodluck Let us know how he does...:)

maximillion1 04-21-2009 07:25 PM

Max is getting neurtered on Friday, he's almost 13 lbs and he is 5 months. I am a little scared to, only as far as care. He is a fairly active little boy, so if any one can tell me exactly how to handle him would be great. From what I've read I know he'll be fine...looks like we're in the same boat Brister.

CouversMom 04-21-2009 09:11 PM

He will do fine!

Couver was fixed a few weeks ago, and he did great! He will be groggy for the day of the surgery, and most likely be back to himself by the next! :D Couver acted like nothing had changed the next day. He did try to lick his stitches a couple times, but we just corrected him... and he was fine! He didn't need a cone or panties, so we were lucky.

Good luck Jackson!! :D

Lucia 04-21-2009 10:32 PM

Good luck Jackson! :D

I feel your worry hun....will send out lots of positive thoughts and good vibes to you both. :) xxx xxx

Breeze 04-21-2009 11:13 PM

I'll be saying prayers for Jackson to feel better soon. :)

BonBon 04-22-2009 04:14 AM

Aww, Jackson. I'm saying prayers you'll be feeling better soon (and that you won't have to wear that cone)!

Mom to Hot Rod 04-22-2009 04:24 AM

We're adding our prayers for a easy surgery and quick recovery. Hot Rod really didn't bother his stitches much. He was out of it for about 3 days then he was rearing to go! lol. Good luck and don't worry, he'll be just fine. :)

Britster 04-22-2009 04:58 AM

Thanks for the comfort, guys!

He's there right now and he seemed really happy... his tail wagging with all the other dogs there, lol. Poor little fella had no idea what he was in for! I dropped him off around 8:15am an they said he will probably be ready by one or two! Until then... I will be a nervous wreck.

Britster 04-22-2009 11:16 AM

UPDATE -

I picked Jackson up around 1:30 today and he was so excited to see me! When the vet brought him out, his whole little body starting squirming and shaking trying to get to me. The car ride home, he was a little out of it but he seemed pretty good, he was still trying to sniff out the window and he wanted to be on my lap, so I let him. Now he's definitely out of it... just laying on the floor, really groggy. He doesn't know what he wants, he keeps getting up and moving from one place to the other! Poor little guy

Sweet Apple 04-22-2009 11:25 AM

Oh Yeaaaaaaaaaah.......glad to hear he's out and home w/mama...he's probably just confused at feeling a little uncomfortable, so he's moving about, a bit, trying to figure it out...sounds like you guys are home free...He'll probably be his old self in 48 hrs...Thanks for letting us know about your little guy...

Ugh, that is the worst part. The guilt you feel. When I dropped Rory off, she thought she was going to daycare at a new place or something as that was our typical morning routine.

I'm sorry I didn't see your post earlier, but I am so glad he made it through a-okay. I'm sure by tomorrow morning he will be his normal self again! Give Jackson some extra love from my girls while he sleeps it off. :aimeeyork

Britster 04-22-2009 11:36 AM

I think he's mad at me! lol. Everytime I try to give him love, he allows it for a bit and then walks away and goes under my bed, lol

I think his mouth is what is bugging him the most, he had 4 teeth pulled

Elaine Benise 04-22-2009 11:38 AM

Poor guy!! He must be in pain. But I'm very glad to hear everything went well!!!

lovespandp 04-22-2009 12:41 PM

Hows Mr.Jackson doing today?

mommy2bella 04-23-2009 08:37 AM

My vet told me it was OK for Bella to lick it, b/c that was her way of cleaning it, but she did have in inside stiches, so there was nothing for her to pull out. He said as long as she wasn't biting at it, it was ok!

I was very worried too! I took off and cried all day. When she got home she was very sleepy, but she woke me up at midnight jumping up and down on her back legs ready to play!!! Little monster!!! After that was FINE. They did send me home with 3 days of Metacam, which is a non-drowsy pain medication.

Good luck and keep us informed!!

Britster 04-23-2009 10:57 AM

Hey! He is doing much better! Still pretty tired but that may be from the pain meds? The pain meds they gave him are called Novox, anyone heard of it? He's been walking around really good, I brought him out on the leash a few times today to go potty and he actually dug up an old bone and picked it up! lol. He brought it inside and started chewing on it so obviously his teeth must be feeling better! He was loving being outside, even if only for a little bit. He hates being cooped up in the house. He's sleeping right now! But he's doing much better already :) I am SO glad that is over with!

His stitches are outside and I've been letting him lick them a little bit just because he's not excessive about it. He just does a few little licks for 20 seconds or so and I know that's their way of healing their wounds. He hasn't tried to bite at them yet or anything so I'm not too worried!
He's got 5 days of pain meds but I have a feeling I won't have to give them for 5 days.

mommy2bella 04-23-2009 11:09 AM

I am so glad he is doing so well! These little guys just bounce right back, huh!?!

Licking is not cleaning or healing. the dogs mouth is not actually as clean as its rumored to be and bacteria from their mouth can get into a fresh incision. They can get an infection in the incision which can take a while to heal OR they can lick the incision open. Licking is not good at all. please don't let him do it. i'm speaking from lots of experience here. I was a vet tech for years and licking causes many infections and wound issues. They don't need to "bite" at the incision to open it up. Even internal stitches can be opened from licking so i don't know why that one vet said it was ok:confused:
