Up date on mia's bile acid test I am posting here in hopes of getting more responses. My 3 year old Mia had a bile acid test last Thursday. I did it to see if she tested high to either confirm my concerns or to see if her symtoms were something else. The vet thought that she could have some sort of brain injury on the right side because of her circling always to the left and the right eye is slow to focus or close and open upon dialation. And said the only way to find out about that was to do a CT scan or MRI. Her bile acid test came back pre test 4 and post test 116.6. She said we can re test to confirm the results and is suggesting treating with anti-biotics and diet change to see if that helps her. I have also asked her to look into doing the Protein C test to see if it can be MVD or a shunt. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I just had a feeling that this could possibly be part of her problem, but I had 3 vets tell me no because of a normal blood panal last Oct. |
A dog with bile acids that are that high should probably be on Denosyl or Vetri DMG, milk thistle, vitamin e and a special diet. The protein c test is a good idea. If the results are off, you may need to go on to scintography. What food does the vet want to use? |
She said that there were several different diets and she is going to look at them to see which one would be best. She also mentioned home cooking. She is also contacting Texas A & M university and Dr. Naef in Little Rock about further testing. She has a schnauser that had liver shunt done in Little Rock. I am guessing that he is her only patient that has had surgery done. She still sees him and tests his bile acids. She was using him as a comparison with Mia's results. |
Cali has very mild MVD and her Bile Acids were 0/89 and on retest 0/47 or close to. I had it confirmed with a liver biopsy. She requires no treatment. I hope you can get some answers on Mia. |
Changing diet Thank you Patti and Ellie Mae for your responses. I talked with the vet again yesterday and we are going to do the diet change, she is ordering the Royal Canine Heptic LS 14 food. The smallest bag that you can get in the Science diet l/d is 20 pounds and we can get an 8 pound bag of the Royal Canine. It would take Mia forever to eat 20 pounds since she is only 4 pounds. She also is going to prescribe an antibiotic that she has had success using with her other liver patients, and then the lactaluse at some point. I will probably do the densyl or marin in addition to these. I will do some research on here to learn other things that she can have and I may try home cooking at some point later on. Also she told me that we could do the Protein C test. She knows how to administer the test after talking with Texas A & M University yesterday. |
I would definitely go ahead with the Protein C test. With post results over 100 and neurological symptoms, Mia could very likely have a shunt. Here is information on the Protein C test: Comparative Coagulation -- NYS Animal Health Diagnostic Center |
