Water dilema??? Scheduled or Not We are in the middle of potty training - when we first started I put her on a feeding schedule to help with the potty training, but my problem is with her water. At first I left water out for her to get to all day, but then the training books said to take the water up to help with the training also, so I did. But later I read that Yorkies need to have access to water at all times. What did, or are, you doing with your babies to get them through potty training? Thanks, ~C |
do you notice a different in taking the water away at certain times? if it has been helping and there have been no problems then i think its fine. I *think* morgan had access to water 24/7 but i can't be really sure. she had a water bottle so she didn't have access to bowls of water which i think helped. |
For the first year, food and fresh water 24/7 I would just watch and when they would drink, I would take pretty much right away to the pee pad. |

If your pup does not have hypoglycemic episodes, is a good size for age, and healthy then you will do fine with scheduled feedings. Some leave water down 24/7 and some pick it up at night. its up to you and your dog. |
If you ask "good" breeders, they will tell you when they're young they need fresh water and food 24/7. |
As Auden alluded, water is the basic stuff of life. Living creatures, like young pups, may go for some considerable time between meals, but not between drinks. Like us, their bodies comprise mainly of water, perhaps as much as 75% water, for an 8-week old pup. Water is the substrate in which all the chemicals of the body are dissolved, all cells are bathed, and all cell contents are suspended. It is also the essential vehicle of the circulatory system. Nothing in the body goes anywhere without water. As little as a 10%-15% reduction in total body water can result in death. And water doesn't just sit there in a static pool. It is constantly lost and replenished resulting in a dynamic status quo. |
Scheduled feedings work great. I have done this with all my babies, but always leave water down 24/7. With young puppies, just feed more often, but put it up after a few minutes if they don't eat it. With the housebreaking, you really have to keep them in your sight at all times, after they eat and play or sleep, take them out, or to the pad or wherever you have set up for elimination. Don't give them the opportunity to have a mistake, set them up for success :):) |

Most likely the breeders are talking about when they are still at the breeders, still weaning, and not yet ready for their forever homes. :) All dogs should have access to H2o, but scheduled feedings is not a bad thing and there is no need to leave food down for 24 hours if you are feeding them properly and in correct quantity :) |
We are all about 24/7 especially with fresh clean water. Maybe it would be helpful to leave a wee wee pad down somewhere close by just in case? |
Water bottles? Thanks for all your replys. I went out and got her a water bottle to drink from. I like that she can have access to it all the time, but it also slows her down her gulping (She likes to gulp it from the bowls and then would spit it back up), and it keeps her chin dry. I am a little worried that she is getting enough - has anyone had experience with water bottles? How much water should she be getting in a day? As for the potty training, I am just being more diligent in watching her and taking her outside every couple of hours. We were successful for 2 and half days. Still trying to figure out her poo schedule. ~C |
Morgan has used a water bottle since the day i brought her home. As long as she is drinking from it a few times a day then she should be fine. Morgan isn't a big drinker so i rarely see her at the water bottle or bowl. All dogs are different. Some drink more water then others. |
I am in the midst of potty training and schedule my Diesel's feedings and it helps A LOT! I leave water down all the time, though. But, I did notice that she doesn't usually drink it that much in between her feedings. |
