When can my yorkie start to have outings? My little girl will be coming home within the next two weeks. She has her first two shots but I will have to get the other two. I want her to go everywhere with me but I dont know if she would be safe. Can anyone give me insight on this issue? Thank-you |
After two sets of shots, I'd say she is safe to go to other peoples homes with you that you know are safe, etc. Only places where you know for sure she will be totally safe from unvaccinated dogs, etc. I would NOT take her into a Petsmart or a Petco, so many sick dogs go in their stores to go into the Banfield Vet's in there. |
Maternal antibodies puppies get from nursing interfere with the first vaccines, so you can't take her on outings until she is at least 16 weeks old. The risk of parvo especially is too high. In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs |
Socializing is going to be extremely important at this age and you should get her out and about as much as possible, but only in a doggie buggy or carry her. I would stay out of the pet stores. Kennel cough is an air born virus that she can pick up. Also no grooming shops. It would be nice if you could form a doggie play-date with other tiny dogs that all are well taken care of with shots and the like. |

I agree you should stay away from common pet places but any little outings will help! |
