Ok so its time for Abby's yearly round of shots again. They want to give her
Distemper, Parvo, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis (CAV-2) Leptospirosis, Heartworm test, bordetella, and rabies.

Uuuummm theres no way im letting the do all of these at once. OH YEA N I AM TELLING THEM ABOUT NO LEPTO. I READ ALOT ON IT HERE N DECIDED WE DONT NEED THAT.

Ok so i guess wat im trying to ask is how many of these can be given at once or wat not? Shud i split the vaccines into two days or something?? My poor baby she is one year n three months old and weighs around 4.4 lbs. Isn't all this a bit much for her at once?

Please let me know, i plan on calling the vet today to make an appointment for the very near future. Thanks

Well, I tell the vet what I want my dogs to get. They get their rabi(3 year) and that's all! I wouldn't even give that if I didn't have too by law.
The youngest one is 10 mos and she hasn't even had her rabi shot yet, and may never if I can help it! You tell them you want her to have rabis and that's it. Most states, that is the only shot that has to be given by law, and make sure you do the 3 year, then you won't even have to worry about anymore shots until 2012

That's sad that they try to do that many at once.

I would space them two weeks apart.
You may want to start with the rabies only because that will be the same day as her exam and the vet has to give that one. The rest can be given by techs without a vet appt. if the vet will let them.

Then I'd do bordatella separately and only if it is necessary and then DHPP again separately.

Interesting -- after the first few sets of puppy shots, the following years afterwards, only the rabies vaccine is necessary?

When they do the fecal test and want to give shots for other things, that's not necessary to do?

They always tell me this and that is recommended for my dog, and I always agree because I don't want them to think that I don't care about my dog's health.

Well, not really. At least one DHP needs to be given after the immune system is fully mature and then the evidence suggests that they are covered for life. This shot would need to be given after the pup shots (like a one year booster). Not everyone agrees with this though and not all vets would be willing to follow this protocol. Things like bordatella need to be given 1-2 times a year to be effective if you have to give them at all.

One thing is for sure...yearly DHP is not necessary and not a very good idea. The most I'd personally do them is every three years or when a titer comes back low back you really should talk to your vet about it and see if you can come to an agreement.

Legally, rabies is the only shot required by law.

But I think it's standard to give your puppy 3-4 sets of puppy shots between the ages of 8 weeks-16/24 weeks (if I remember correctly.) And then I BELIEVE they need the boosters for those shots the following year. And then you never really have to give them again. They're said to last a dog a lifetime. I definitely don't believe in over-vaccinating a dog. It's useless. Jackson had a reaction to lepto and it was so scary! I felt so bad for him. He got 3 sets of puppy shots (DHPP the 1st and 3rd time and DHLPP the 2nd time,when he had reaction.) He has not had rabies yet even tho by law, he should have by now.. He's 6 months old. He will be getting his soon.

thats wat i always thought... that i wud only have to go back for the rabies...

so Ellie May... i shud give the rabies first? they also want a stool sample but thats easy. ok so get the rabies first, then two weeks later bordetella??? or disptemper???

is it honestly necessary to give her all those shots again tho??? thats so bizzare.

Let me explain, this is a new vet. it was time for abby to get her teeth cleaning n baby teeth pulled out n my regular vet wanted $800!!! they r insane. so she has been to that new vet n they did a physical to make sure she was fine which she was n had the teeth thing done last thursday.

Do u think that maybe they wanna give her all those shots cuz she's new therE?

No, it isn't because she is new.
It's because when you are talking about a modified live virus vaccine (like parvo and distemper), one has to be given after the immune system is fully mature. A puppy's immune system is not fully mature, so those may not last a lifetime. The one year booster could last a lifetime but that is newer research and most vets won't go with it.

Rabies is a killed vaccine and extensive studies about duration of immunity are underway now.

They are over vaccinating pups, I hate even giving a rabi shot every 3 years after watching this video. Mine always have their puppy shots, then nothing except the rabi. The outside dogs I have given distemper too(one time). For the most part, the inside dogs have actually gone without rabi shots more than they should, but, they're pee pad trained, and when they go in to the fenced back yard, I'm out there with them. I think my 11 year old shih tzu has had a rabi shot maybe 3 times, and the 6 year old yorkie just had her 3rd rabi shot, and I got it for the 3 years this time. The last shot for it she had when she was 2. My 4 year old biewer has only had 2 rabi shots and is due now, but, am waiting awhile longer, then will do the 3 year on him.

How old is your puppy? If shes tiny, I would hold off on the rabi shot. Like I said, my 10 mo old hasn't even had hers yet, and she won't until after a year.
I've never done bordatella on any of mine except one yorkie that my son has.

I agree we are over-vaccinating our dogs. I do make sure the girls that are breeding are titered and have full immunities for their puppies. The dogs that go to dog shows have annual 6-in-1--no lepto and bordatella for Kennel cough. I delay rabies as long as I can on the puppies. My vet works with me so that we only do 1 shot at a time/visit.

I'm getting Jackson neutered next Wednesday, as well as three teeth pulled and microchipped. They told me to just get the rabies shot that he has not had yet the same day... and they would give it to him AFTER the operation. Would you guys not do this? I'm pretty positive I'm going to tell them NOT to give him the shot yet. But I just wanted your opinions. He's legally due for his rabies shot (he's 6 months old) but... should he get his rabies the week after his neuter?

ok so its been like a month already n i been putting if off wayyyy too long. can you please explain to me how to go about these shots again? but please use the names i put up top so i can tell them exactly wat i want. I will not give her the lepto shot thats for sure. thanks

The vet has to give rabies (a tech can't do it if the vet isn't right there), so if you make any appt., that's probably the one I'd do that day. Then two weeks later you can come in and just see a vet tech. They can give bordatella (if you even need it) or the DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) vaccine. Then two weeks later they can give the other one. You should not need 3 vet appts. because a tech can give all shots except the rabies if the vet orders them. Usually the DHPP is given as a combo but your vet may get singles in if you want. I personally would give them in the combo though.
