It will be between $40-70 for the first visit. But there is going to be many more expenses on the first 6 months including but not limiting to : get his shot , put him on sentinel/Advantage and get him fix. Good luck in your search for the perfect puppy! |
I would call around different vet places first. A lot of them offer puppy packages. This includes exams and all vaccines for one set fee. For example, I got mine for $140.00 total . This included the first visit. It covered ALL of her vaccines and exams and packet/and record keeping chart. Each time I brought Suzi in she was completely examined too. And they also her a flea protection. And anther one to take home with me. Typically, each vet visit alone would cost me $35 just for the visit. We are in central Ca. a much cheaper area in Cali, but, the place I take Suzi to is a fully certified Vet Hospital. Just call around . ANd check with friends, get some referals. |
I was lucky enough to get her checked the moment i bought her by a legit doctor and i didnt have to go see one in another 3 weeks and she was perfectly in good health the moment i paid for her i got free food and free check up i liked that well it wasnt free if u think about how much i paid for her |
I don't remember how much Oscar's first appointment was, but I remember it was alot. He did, though, get a few vaccines because he was due. And just to give you an example, Oscar went for his yearly check-up a couple of weeks ago and we spent $217. This included the visit, a rabies vacc, his 5-in-1 vacc, the vaccine they do through the nose, a fecal analysis, a heartworm blood test, and a 6 month supply of heartworm meds (Interceptor.) Proper care of a Yorkie (or any dog) can be costly, but it's well worth it! |
Well I got my Bryan on Aril 19th 2008 and on the 21st he was at the vet for his first visit with his vet the cost was $57 but he had to go back for other visits up until he was six months old... A good breeder will recommend that you take you pup to a vet within the first 72hrs |
You have time to call around to the vets in your area and interview them. I did this when I was waiting for my Jeter to come home from the breeders and I was so glad i did. I called the vets office first and then asked a few questions about their practice and how their experience with small dogs were and whet the price was for shots and other things. then if I liked how the interview was going, I asked if I could come over to check the office out. I got to talk to 3 of our local vets and then i made my choice with the one I wanted. Price was not a factor for me, instead i went to the vet that I got the best feel for and lucky for me he is just a block from my house! They vets were real impressed that I took the time before my puppy was home to line up a vet! And I learned a few things too;) |
Ours was only $21 and I was pleasantly surprised. It was simply a wellness check like a child getting a physical to play sports. We had to have it (within 72 hours, I think) to comply with our breeder's guarantee on her health. However, we also had a wellness check letter from the breeder's vet and a record of all prior vet visits/shots, etc. Our breeder is very thorough and even has the label from the vaccines placed on the paperwork so that it is easy to verify that the meds were not outdated when given. We go again this Friday for a vaccination. They would have given it last week but I wanted our first visit with her vet to be "pain-free" and it was. Our vet and his wife have a Yorkie, too, and he was wonderful with our Taffy. We left the office with a peaceful (non-traumatized) puppy and a new puppy kit which contained several neat things for her including her first flea and heartworm treatments. We would have gone to this particular vet regardless of cost (well, within reason...we are retired and on pensions) but before we went, I called and asked alot of questions including office visit costs, etc. (Plus, since I am so frightened of snakes, I also wanted to find out which branch of their clinics treated them. Thankfully, it wasn't the clinic closest to us!) |
toby just had his well puppy visit and it was $35. he goes back for shots in two weeks and for the 2nd round of shots/boosters it is $42. When he gets neutered it will be $175. I'm in Western New York, and even here the vet prices vary a lot... so definately call around. I also have to add that I LOVE my vet and he is my best friends uncle, so if i ever need anything after hours they are always willing to help me out :) |
Puppy packages are a good thing to look for. The first vet I took Bailey to right after I got her was $45 for the simple office visit. But then I switched vets because that one gave too many vaccines. At the other vet I bough a puppy package, which includes 3 check ups, 3 sets of vaccines, and 3 wormings (if you need them). It cost about $130. Too bad I went to that other vet first or that would have been included. |
Here in my state, NJ, cost 225.00, 2 shots and advantage AND no puppy package.:thumbdown |
Ok well I think my pup will have all its shots and stuff |

need help! still learning Hi! mia is my very first pet. she was born june 22, 2007. my friend told me she is fixed, and had all her shots. does she need to see a vet every year? is it true that there is a dog insurance? i will greatly appreciate if you can help me understand my mia. |

yeah they do need to get vaccinated once a year and I heard the dog insurance is more expensive than what u normally pay at the vet its like 400 dollers a month that is more than a cell phone bill or a cable bill I think that is nuts but maybe there are cheaper ones I am not sure u have to check with ur vet which insurance they approve:animal-pa |
also if u get a dog that is 16 weeks or more even like 6 month's from a breeder i am pretty sure most of them dont have all there vaccinations maybe the first two cuz its important they are dewarmed so don't think ur getting away with it easy cuz they are a couple month's older even if they are and the person says they have all their shot's u should always be sure and get them compleatly checked by ur vet and get them there for sure shot's from ur vet so they can keep it documented!!:) |

every check up and shot is different my vet charge's by the size of the dog and of course how many shot's and items i need to purchase to bring home with me if the pup is sick or whatever so it always range's i never had the same price twice but i am lucky my vet price's are very good and the vet is great |

I advise anyone that does not have a good sized savings account, to get Pet Insurance. That way a poor dog does not have to be put to sleep because the owner cannot afford a $5,000-$10,000 life-saving surgery. There are still deductibles with insurance. You may have to pay $50 for a visit, but it is the emergency situations you are really insuring. You may only have to pay 10% of a large surgery bill and most have caps so you would never have to pay over a certain deductible no matter how high the bill goes. I think it is better to have the money in the bank set aside in case of emergency. But that is not always possible, so insurance fills the gap. |

Puppies go thru a series of vaccinations. Each time it costs $$$. I think it is important that they get their vaccinations especially if you plan on taking it out in public. There are many "doggie" places that you can go to where there are un-vaccinated dogs and your puppy could be exposed to some things that could prove to be deadly. |
My first visit was 157.00 that was for wormer and ear medication for a yeast infection , shots and an exam and front line, next visit was a shot and exam 115.00 , this last appt was for Kennel Cough and it cost me 109.00 that was for exam and meds |
For Wantayorkie23 and Joni, everyone has given some really great info here, such as different vets charge different prices and you should ask what to expect for a well puppy check and it will cost more if you want it checked for liver shunt and other more exotic Yorky problems. You should ask about what shots they will give and how many. There is some controversy amoung some vets that imply that too many shots in too short a time can cause health problems in animals. Most animal insurance is very expensive, perhaps one day it will get less so. Currently this kind of insurance mostly helps with animals with traumatic problems that need help with broken bones or cancer treatment or expensive surgeries. Find out what shots are given, what tests are done during the visit and how many visits will be done the first year. After the first year, you don't have to go back as often unless there is something wrong. Rabies shots after the animal is an adult, can be given once every 3 years and this is true with many of the other shots also. Worm and heartworm and flea prevention will be every year though ;) |
My pup last month had an exam, 2nd set of shots,100.00 |
thank you for the advice i greatly appreciate all the information you've all given. they are all very informative and helpful. i will check her immunization records and will bring her to a vet. thank you again. i greatly appreaciate every input!:animal-pa joni and mia |
